VAT
« on: June 21, 2011, 08:04:50 pm »
Just looked at a bill for some gear
I bought couple of weeks ago.
They added the postage on then
charged VAT on both the item and
the postage - doesn't seem right
paying VAT on postage.

Quite sure they can't add Vat onto the cost of postage. Post and Package might be different as they could add it in there.

Although a supplier doesn't pay VAT if they send something through Royal Mail they have to charge VAT on the postage to the recipient as it is a service that has been provided by a VAT registered company (the supplier).  The only time VAT isn't charged on P&P is when the goods being sent are VAT exempt/Zero rated (such as books).

Sadly John (JandS), its the norm.
Just pay the tax like we expected to do.
Its a crippler, but it aint going to go away.

Wish I had never joined the tax scheme.  ;D

And that's why I leave these matters to my fantastic wife because I'm happy to put my hands up and admit that admin isn't my strong point ;D
Vat on postage? How did that come about? it's not as if you have a choice on the matter if you need something :o

I was told that it was only really charged on luxury items and services when it first came in......should have stayed that way :(

Ted Heath introduced VAT and all the plebs were joyous as it was only applied to luxury goods like Rolls, Royces, Rolex watches etc.

Once a tax is introduced there is only one way for it to go, up, up, up.

If I remeber corretly there was a thing called purchase tax

I think there were two rates

From a retail point of view before computers VAT has been a pain

I remember once having to work all weekend changing the price stickers as the tax went up on Monday

Got to Monday and we received a letter from Head Office saying there was no need to do that , the increase nly applied to new stock

That year we reduced our shringage ie missing stock through staff theft shop liffting , parcels gone astray , bad paper work etc etc to nil and ended up with a substantional plus figure.

Going from memory Purchase tax was as you say two rates, the upper one was I think 55% on luxury goods, all applied to the wholesale price before the retailer got them, so there was no workload for the retailer. When vat first came in it was a horrible shock for shopkeepers etc. who had to do all this accounting stuff - they used to run courses to show people how to do it - and it applied to anyone with a threshold turnover of £5000 plus. The starting rate was 10%. A year or two later the labour government put it up to two rates - 8% and 12.5% for things and stuff  respectively Then it became 15% overall, then 17.5% and now 20%, and the annual threshold went up year by year to its present level. All blamed on Ted Heath who at the same time gave away our fishing to the Common Market and abolished RPM (Resale Price Maintenance) so loads of small shops disappeared...one could go on but thats enough boredom for one night

You don't understand. This country needs all that extra money. We have people to house and feed from all over europe and beyond and fight wars in countries far away that have nothing to do with us, but we are British and we need to show the world how benevolent we are.

I trust our politicians are spending our money wisely.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.
