Scammers again
« on: June 14, 2011, 08:21:49 am »
The  print scammers from Merseyside are on the prowl again. One of our local customers has been sucked in. They wanted 400 quid to put an add in a police magazine. Luckily I think I caught him just in time.

They never give up do they ::)

Always find that a good way of getting rid is to sound interested and ask for their contact name and number with the police/fire/ambulance, so I can just check things through.......amazing how quick they hang up then ;D

they usually contact you through free listing sites on the net. soon as they see a new listing they pounce. its easy to get rid. just say your not interested and your advertising budget has been allocated for the year so theres no more pennies in the pot.

ive only ever been caught out once by adverting scammers, these guys promised loads of work from there mag and i fell for it, but never again will yellow pages catch me off guard. ;D

Had the call last Thursday, school kids safety campaign thing, they always start with we spoke to you earlier, the tape of office noise in the background always gives it away.
Have also had books for schools, fire service wall chart, police wall chart, tell them to take a big running jump  ;D

Yes there are loads of Scammers out there, trying to grab some of your hard earned cash. I have been caught out once and I am very warey of them cold callers now. If you are not sure if its a scam, always google it and it will open your eyes. there are quite a lot of charity scams that promise to advertise your business in their mags so beware, these cold callers are very convincing so don't fall for it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry i meant to post about this exact same thing the other day to warn people.

I had a call back in jan re: Safeguard magazine, at the time i was looking for different ways and places to advertise.

Anyway they sent me an add proof (which I never approved) invoice for £150.

I recieved a copy of this magazine the other day, nice looking magazine but basicly just ramm packed full of ads, heres a few examples:

Myself based in sunderland, Dentist in Hull, A plumber in Wakefield, Garden maintenence in York, Auto/MOT garage in Leeds, Hairdressers in Derby, Florist in north yorkshire, A pub in york, Decorator in Scarborough, Driving instructor in Bridlington, another carpet cleaner in Doncaster, Taxi company in Middlesborough, Tanning salon in Washington (near Gateshead), aerial installer in Durham.

I couldnt believe it this magaine is obviously distributed over a wide area and not really in my interest to advertise in.

Now if it was just me i would have thought oops ive droped a bollock, but as you can see from the examples above we are all just after work/trade in a fairly localised area.

Have we all droped a bollock or were we all lead to believe the magazine had a smaller distribution area?

Well im definatly over my SILLY PHASE of considering these type of things.

The scam is you received a nice copy and so would all the other advertisers. No one else would have. And then after a year you say that was a waste of money I nver got one job off it ;D

Everytime I get a call and they start the converation with "Hi, is that Mr Nigro?" or words to that effect, I flick the vacs back on and let them hear what 2 three stage vac motors sound like!

golf club ones doing the rounds too! This one gave the name of the local golf club and details on their membership and how the clubhouse is a tip top one with possibly loads of leads and work to be had......
I know this golf club.......yes they have a club as in membership, but no clubhouse, bar, eating place etc etc........... just somewhere to sign in for local people to have a quiet round of golf.
Told the advertising guy I would call him back (NOT) once I had been to have a look to see the changes that must have been made in the last few weeks......... ;D

Had that one a couple of weeks ago, golf club a few miles from here, one of their members had recommended me supposedly, bloke was saying they were all high earners, and could afford to pay premium prices for work carried out, blah blah blah.He got quite aggressive when I told him I no longer need to advertise,as most of my work is coming from word of mouth, from all my happy customesr, like the guy who recommended me   ;D

This is my 7th year, pulled out of yellow pages completely this time, just yell, which is rubbish, but keeps the spiders crawling.
Was just saying that to get rid of the scammer who called me,not noticed any difference in the amount of work that is coming in as yet.
