Terry, I've done the maths on this.  If you're on a water meter, it's MUCH cheaper to run at 50:50 pure:waste and knacker your membranes regularly than to spend the money on water. 

Let's say your water (inc sewerage charge) is £3/1,000 litres.

Run at an ideal 20:80 ratio and each 1,000 litres will cost you £15
Run at 50:50 they will cost £6.

You don't need to save £9 for many days (well, 25 days, to be exact) to pay for a £225 4040 RO membrane.

That is a good point Vin but also worth remembering that your output Tds reading will also very likely be higher with a 50:50 ratio so will reduce the life of the polishing resin.

I have a 400gpd pumped system from www.vyair.com
Cheap as chips, good output TDS, and the waste ration is very near 50:50. If you're producing a lot of water you may want to get brand name membranes when they need changing, but I'm doing fine with the cheapo Chinese ones that came with the unit.

we run two ro systems

unit one - twin 4040 pumped (grundfos pump) all fancy, all singing, all dancing, auto-flush etc.  Cost me a packet but was well worth the money, only bought one bag of resin in near 5 years and produces about 800ltrs a day, 5 days a week.  Prefilter changed every 4 weeks and carbon changed every 8 weeks.

unit two - merlin, produces about 600ltrs a day, needs membranes changed soon and goes through a bag of resin every 6 months (twin 18ltr di).  Prefilters same as above with no merlin prefilter in top sump, just using 2 pentek 10inch housings before ro.

Tap tds for both is around 100ppm if I remember correctly although units are at seperate sites.

personally I would go for something similare to the first ro - twin 4040 or single 4040 but with a good pump and remember to flush regular.  I get about 50/50 waste to pure ratio and produce a minimum of 350ltrs/hr.

Good point - must bring that into my calculations.
