PageRank is just a guide to go by when exchanging links nothing more. Its a google thing anyways..

Mikes site is No1/No2 for all the search terms (thats what counts) where as Dimond's site is no where near the the first 7 pages!!
Find that strange as he's got the keywords in his url aswell unlike Mikes.

My point was diamonds site is more google friendly than Mikes as his has a page rank of 3 and not 1, this means google sees this site as being more important than Mikes, PR is important for any site ask on any website forum and they will agree  ;)

Just out of interest...  What is classed as reasonable?

What do people expect to pay / think is reasonable for

1/ On page optimisation.     and

2/ Off site promotion?

£50 per hour i'd say would be good rate. same with carpet cleaning i guess what the people on here who only clean charge per hour and if think seo is more of a skill so it if anything be more. pay £200 and that's only 4 hours, not the best considering websites are the number one way customers will find you.

on page optimisation should be much less as it's basic stuff that basic seo companies can easily and quickly do without much research.

Forget hourly rates, focus on what you want doing, when you need it by and how much for achieving that outcome.

You can easily be sucked into a cheap hourly rate and they drag the thing out cos they have you by the balls. Go off past projects.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.
