The Canvassing Motivation Post!
« on: May 20, 2011, 09:50:14 am »
Right, I've been looking through my work and I reckon since going van mounted we're going through our present stuff by about 25% quicker than what we were using a backpack and trad.  Some of this is because we can work faster, and some of this is because it's less physically demanding, we can work longer.

But the bottom line is that at the end of next week (starting at around the beginning of June), we have almost no work for two weeks because my two weeks worth of every-other-month accounts were all done at the beginning of this month.

So, I've a gap I would like to fill, and I have next week (part time) and then the next two weeks (full time) to fill this gap.

I've got about 500 leaflets left over (and I don't plan to get any more), I've got 1000 business cards, and my plan is to use the leaflets, but mainly canvass.  Wor Lass won't knock on doors, so I'm on my own with this.

I reckon, as a target £30 worth of work per day is comfortable figure to canvass - which equates (for this area) to be 3 X 3 Bed Semis.  If I got £30 worth of new work per day, for the next three weeks (working Mon to Fri), that's £450 quids worth of work, which is better than a kick up the ass.

Anyway, there's been quite a few posts about canvassing recently, so I'm off out this afternoon (we have very little work on today) to get £30 worth of work.

So, what's you're thoughts?  Is my target too low?  Also, whose canvassing now and how're you getting on with it?

I just thought I'd post this to help with my motivation; I'm a great starter, but not very good a finishing!  :P

I think it all depends mate...iv been out for hours before and had nothing but yesterday while i was cleaning i picked up 5 new custies. So i think you should just try and get at least £30 per day but as soon as you get a few you will get excited and carry on anyway  ;D! Good luck buddy and let us know how you get on

Hi tosh
That is a realistic target. I can canvass and get 5-8 per night but thats when i do well. I get nights where i get nothing at all. My canvasser is out and easily picking up 3 per night and i have him working 6 nights per week so i expect a sheet at the end of the week with at least 15-18 new customers.
I have had to change a lot of work to monthly to manage the high influx of new work plus i pick up around 5 new customers per week while cleaning so im pushing myself now to get the work cleaned within 6 days.

Go for it but be careful not to take on too much

Best Regards

I've spent about 8 hours this week leafleting. At a guess I've dropped about 1,200 leaflets. So far 6 new jobs and 5 quotes. I'm sure more will follow. Seems to me that determined leafleting is as good as canvassing plus when you quote you are in a stronger position because they called you.

Cheers guys;

Well I've been out for two hours knocking on doors and I've gotten two £10 jobs; I didn't get that third one, but never mind.

So with about three hours canvassing (I did a bit last week) I've gotten £45 worth of calendar monthly work (one job I reduced from £10 to £5 and made a front only, because getting to the rear was too much of a pain).

I note the point about the leaflets, and I've done a lot of leafleting over the years - purely because knocking on doors frightened me - but I think I prefer knocking since you get a better success rate; it's more direct; and you can avoid those places you want to avoid.

I'll do a couple of hours tomorrow too.

I used to deliver a batch of leaflets the day before I was going to knock, telling the customer that I would be calling back the following day and an approximate time, I used this technique on a couple of newly built estates and had a lot of success.. in one afternoon I picked up 30 new customers!!

set it too high and u may get down if u miss it ... 3 a day day in day out is mre realistic and acheivable but i like to look at any new customers as a yearly figure so 3 x £10 jobs becomes £360 which I tell myself is nearly half a thousand pounds ... much better than £30  ;)

Why not enjoy some of the extra time you've made for yourself? You'll be a long time dead.
It's a game of three halves!

To do what, Gold?  Don't say 'spend more time with your family', we'll just end up getting on each other's nipples endings; and I spend enough time with them as it is.  Last night I asked Wor Lass what she would like to do; maybe go to Cardiff for a nice meal or go to the pictures or something and do you know what she chose to do?  We had a Macdonalds and went shopping in ASDA, Bristol.  I mean FFS!  I 'ate shopping.

And I don't have any hobbies like trainspotting, model making, or listening to music.

I can only meditate so much, and I get enough time to study already.

I reckon, I could have two-weeks off during the first week of June; that'd bore me; I'd prefer to have one-week off, and work another, but not two-weeks.  In the past I could waste weeks by spending them in either a drunken or hungover state, but I don't even drink now, so I think I'd prefer to work.

The devil makes use of idle hands, Gold, and we mightn't spend a long time dead!  ;D

Tosh, get out there and bloody well do it. Stop looking for excuses. Shape up man!

When the going gets tough the tough get going.

I've had to give myself the odd talking to but at the end of the day we know what has to be done so just do it........ One life, this is NOT a rehersal.

You will feel so much better with yourself when its done. Set yourself a target then go out and get it.

personally i like the leafletting route, mainly because its easier to pay a bod to do it and as long as youve a decent website appealing to the ordinary Joe & Mary ,it funnels in the work no end. everybody has a computer these days so you can track the location of the clicks . i make sure my leafletter has 2 energy bars in the bag+water and then bought him a quality sausage roll after each 4 hr stint.

What do you mean by the location bobby? do you mean the area the person is in who clicks on your website? how would you go about doing that?

i have a Vistaprint website and it tell you the town and the number of clicks on a particular day . i believe if i paid a bit more for the DELUX package it would tell me even more info. However ive only got the ordinary
im regularly suprized when i log into vistaprint to look at my site activity, somebody in Cambridge often clicks onto it 100times in 1 day . is it a competitor? a crazy ex more likely !

the main thing is that after my lad leaflets i get a big rush of clicks from the area he did it. proves he wasnt snoozing up an alley somewhere
