Sod Mets advice please
« on: May 18, 2011, 04:54:10 pm »
Hi Guys,

I had a job today where a young child managed to get hold of some paints and decided to turn into Rolf Harris on a wool based bedroom carpet as you will see from the pictures :o I cleaned it the best I could although it must have been walked in and pressed down as it was through the fibres and down to the backing I have read posts on here about sod mets which seem to be used quite a lot it's not something I have ever used or really know a lot about so my question is could it help to remove what is left in the carpet ???. I understand you can pick it up at a ladies hair salon how much does it typically cost? Any help on this is greatly appreciated.

Rich ;D

Think you may be thinking of peroxide, sod met i get from the local beer and wine home brewing centre they use it for cleaning equipment, have never heard of it being used on paint, i use it on wine/tea/coffee/ vomit/food colouring and browning stains

Yes maybe I though it was a kind of bleaching agent ??? I have read on various posts that it can be used as a last resort on many things so wondered if it could on paint also. Would be nice to totally remove the colouring from the carpet I don't do many jobs from paint spills but everytime that I do there always seems to be a faint colouring left though I guess as the spill went through to the backing and it's a wool based carpet it's to be expected.

H Rich,
I have never used to reduce the colour from paint spills, how ever judging by the photos I see no reason as to why not an attempt should be made providing you let the custy know of your ntentions.

As you have asked for info on the use here goes, buy the powder from a beer/wine making shop ,mix a cpl of table spoons with VERY HOT  water ,idealy put the so;ution in to a spray bottle herin lays the problem, quite often the water is too hot for the plastc tube ,but I have found if you simply put it in a bowl and dab on the mix with a terry towerl the results are the same, air dry with hair dryer and see the difference ,another application wll often improve it more. hope this helps.

It is childrens paint I thought that's ok I will read on the label what's in it but although having descriptions in about twenty languages yes you guessed it nothing in English ::)
I am a bit of a perfectionist or at least try to be so would be great to remove the remaining blue colour left in the carpet ;D

I would also throw into the conversation that there may be some lightening of the carpet in that area once you use sod mets.

If the carpet lightens to match the carpets colour or near abouts then that's ok as long as the blue goes ;D

A couple of other points along with the other good advice. Test an area with solution in a hidden area, dry it off and check for colour change. You can remix with slightly more hot water or less Sod Met for a weaker solution. A table spoon = 15ml scoop, tea spoon = 5ml. It won't hurt to have a play with the stuff so you can judge reaction. You might like to try this supplier too, quick delivery and as Colin said cheap as chips  http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2Kg-Sodium-Metabisulphite-metabisulfite-Food-Grade-/330465990708?pt=UK_BOI_Medical_Lab_Equipment_Lab_Supplies_ET&hash=item4cf14ed834 Though it has gone up a coupleof quid :o

Hi, i dont want to sound to negative but i think you did a really good job to remove as much paint as you have done and the temptation is to carry on working on the stain. Sometimes using a bleaching agent such as sod met can leave a lighter patch around the stain making it more noticeable than it is now.Good stain removal is knowing when to stop.

Ignore the rest of the above posts and follow Steve's advice.

If you have to post on a forum asking about how to use this stuff, DO NOT go playing on "real" carpets with it, for christ's sake!!  You WILL end up with either a non-result or a damaged carpet.

By all means get some carpet offcuts, stain them yourself with various things and play away to your heart's content.  That's really the way to learn if you want to go down this road, not by using customers' property as your training lab.  It isn't as easy as some folks make it sound.

As already stated, let the custyknow of  your ntentions and clarify, I know what I would rather see, a slightly lighter shade of pale rather than blue, but that is just my opinion.

Thanks for all the advice guys. After listening to the comments about using sod met my gut feeling was it can't be as easy as it sounds as nothing ever is, however I will qualify the customer and then it's their choice. Also I have plenty of off cuts so will get some sod met and start experimenting and that way if I do mess up  its only an off cut that gets damaged. If I do go ahead with the customer I will post the results.

I agree with the lads that say dont use it unless you know what you're doing.

we use a variety of oxidising bleaches / reducing agents and unless you really understand the carpet type / staining and the stuff itself dont bother as the results can be catastrophic (as i can honestly testfiy)

We use hydrogen peroxide, sodium met, sodium perborate, sodium hydrosulphite and carry titanium sulphate.

looking at the stain, a reducing agent is probably the answer but very risky.  You could try applying it but with a cotton bud instead of direct spray on a small area to begin with and see how it turns out.

all the best
