Mike,
Just because you've got a pin doesn't mean you'll end up on the map list as there are so many all vying for the same thing, it's all a bit hiy and miss in my experience.

I've got the pin and verified the listing, the postcard said the listing would show in 1 day but that was 5 days a go.

this was for a new business with only one other company having a google map listing.

It is hit and miss at the moment as its still being tested and changed. The fact it is a new business actually goes against it so could take up to 2 months to be shown, most are up within a few weeks though

From getting the pin, mine was up within days - although it shows up on the 7th page, which is a little annoying as there are only 3 or 4 other local carpet cleaners.
Other factors can effect a listing eg  is there another business using the same address or phone number etc.

I was checking some US results and they are erring towards "blended" results (combined website and Places results). This hopefully, brings SEO back into the equation.

I've noticed "normal" websites starting to move above places again over her in the last couple of weeks as well. Fingers crossed.

p.s. You look far better when you use Sarah's computer  ;D

You think!! I prefer my picture  ;D.

SEO is always going to be important, down here ( see if you can make sense of this) putting 'carpet cleaners andover' into Google (private browsing) gives me one organic listing then a Google Places then an organic listing then the rest of Google Places down to 'F' then back to organic listings again, so it looks like they are integrating the 2 methods!

As Harry said, you can only have one Google Places advert per house or telephone number.

Here's a screenshot of some USA "local results showing the "blended" approach (Places + SEO'd website combined). I suspect ours will soon look like this.
