R/O usage.
« on: May 06, 2011, 10:39:55 pm »
Hi,

Does anyone know how irregularily an r/o could be used over a month?

In other words, can an r/o be used for a couple of days and then not used for 3 or 4 weeks before being used again for a couple of days.

The reason for my asking is that a friend who is caretaking a block of flats, wants to clean all the flats windows himself once a month, but as the block of flats is 3 stores high, has got to use wfp. He won't be using the system for any other work.

Personally, I would recommend that he buy in his water requirements as and when needed, but got to wondering if anyone had experience of this.
Our old school cartaker used to get paid to clean the school windows twice a year by the school. At the time he did ask me if he could use wfp with a small r/o once every 6 months. He felt it would be alright if he kept water in the membranes.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

My understanding is that the membranes should not be allowed to dry out. So i would think this would be fine. But with such minimal usage he nay be better to go the DI only route i'd of thought?

Hi Mikecam,
DI is out as it's a very hard water area.

I make water once every 7 days with a HF5-4040 and every 6 weeks it is not used at all.

I have fitted gate valves to all the inlet and outlets and perhaps this helps prevent drying out as it is effectively a closed system.

But for once a month use, perhaps buying in the water is the way to go.

Cheers
Dave.

Personally I would run a little water through once a week to make sure - but I have known them to be left for far longer.
I do think buying the water or DI would be better for such a small amount but you seem to have ruled that out already.

This will be fine as long as the system is kept as a closed loop system, so that the membranes stay wet, as has been said. The important thing will be to flush the membranes when first used again after being left for weeks. I would recommend that it be flushed for 10 minutes before production and there should be no problems.
