Pen and paper.  Pen stolen from argos, you could use old envelopes for paper.

Or you could maybe invest a little money on one of the major tools used to run a business?  www.carpetcleaningsoftware.co.uk for example.  Plenty of satisfied customers on here and other forums.

I use Microsoft Office Access, it's as good
a database as any and it's free.

As I've said many times carpet cleaning is a marketing business. You need to know how to clean carpets but that comes with basic training and experience.
Marketing is the place you need to spend the bulk of your efforts on if you want to run a succesfull business. I would think a decent software programme which will help no end would be a priority purchase.

John is right and mailing to people who have already warmed to you is a sure thing.

Cleanersmate just makes the whole mailshotting process simple and easy just like you get a new portable or upholstery tool to make your job easier and make more money faster.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Jamie are you for real??!!  Attempting to run a business but unwilling to spend any money on it wtf ???

Why not just clean carpets with a mop and bucket, that'll save a few quid.
