I use them for my domain registration and web hosting.  Very good service, simple enough to use and no problems.  Good prices too, use with confidence :)

Yep you can just shift your DNS.  Should be in the FAQs how to do it, i THINK you need to apply for a domain name transfer from your existing provider and then wait a few days or something.

I'm not an interweb genius at all, luckily have a good friend who is though, he does this stuff for me!

If you are using them for hosting you will have a Germany based server. Ideal for local SEO if you live in.... Germany.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

Explain?

If you have a choice you are best to have your site hosted on a UK server as this is a ranking factor for local SEO. Many people think 1&1 are UK based but there servers are in Germany.

A lot of people will say they have US hosting and that  they are number 1 on Google which is fair enough. If however you are scratching your head wondering why you are poorly ranking this is something to look at, but is usually too late unless you want the hassle of moving.

When did they move to Germany? They were in Slough

Their UK offices are in Slough, the data centre is in Germany where the company was originally formed (it has a complicated history of buy-outs etc)

Another piece of useless information >:(
I've got all my websites on 1and1 and i can assure you there's nothing wrong with their rankings.

for .co.uk domains it makes no difference where the server is, for .com it does

Yeah, I used to think that Matt, maybe something has changed since you read it. Obviously it's not a massive factor, especially in carpet cleaning and it may become even more of a factor in the future when you think about it.

i still stand by it Wynne i have had hosting both here and in the US and personally don't find any difference, but then its one of those debates that can be argued and counter argued Lol.
I mainly use my hosting account in the US as i can host as many sites as like for a very good price which works well for me.

I like HG too.  :)

All I did was set up two sites, same content same everything .co.uk and put on a UK and US host, easy to test. Whilst it's way down the list of factors currently, it may be a bigger factor in the future looking at Gs general direction with local.
