You know, some customers don't even want to meet their window cleaners.  I've got one I've met once some years back.  I e-mail him, he pays by bank transfer.

Another, I've met twice in about five years.  He pays by standing order.

Another (who I think suffers with mental health problems) just likes me to leave an envelope, even if she's in, and she sends me the cheque within a few days.

Meeting customers isn't always necessary to keep business.  I think you have to be aware enough to know when a customer wants a chat, or when they don't want to be bothered.  I mean my postman is great, but I don't want to chat with him everyday.  I've got things I've got to be getting on with.

It's my disabled customers or elderly pensioners; the ones I feel sorry for that I tend to look after most with a 'personal touch'.  Some repay me by recommending me to neighbours, and others repay me by looking pleased when we turn up.

I think as long as I'm 'Britishly friendly' (not overbearing) and polite, yet firm when required, I can't go far wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not Mother Theresa, and I've one-or-two pensioners I'd like to throttle; but there's more to being nice at work than just doing it for the money.
