Battery dying then working again
« on: March 25, 2011, 03:07:43 pm »
Hi guys,

Just a quick question. I have a trolley system that I now use as a van system. Today the system just stopped. On the controller it was flashing 'Bat'. The battery was fully charged the night before.

Once I got home it started to work again. I went back out, finished the original job and again the battery stopped working. Went home and working again.

Do batteries have a life span (this one is 12 months old). Has anyone experienced this or know what might be wrong?

Cheers

yes batteries definately have a life span! and if yours has lasted 12 months then I would say that was pretty good going. It could also be the connections or the fuse, if there is any corrosion on them then this could result in there not being enough power getting through. It is also the reason I ripped my pump controller off of my system and threw it in the bin!!! I just use a pump connected directly to the battery now, far less problems and hassle!! And if the power gets low it just keeps going (a little slower) until the battery is completely flat!

I can't actually get to the battery because its in the trolley in a container.  Might be time to dispose of trolley and set it up differently.

Why would it stop then work 20 mins later?

Leisure batteries can last for ages. Ive had mine for over 2 years.
How is it connected... ie crocodile clips? I would check the connections, I had the same thing happen to me earlier this week and it turned out to be "corrosion" on the live battery terminal. Cleaned it up and its fine

it might not be the battery it could be the pump overheating then cutting out when it cools down it resets and runs again for a few it may be on its way out

Checked connections and all seem ok. Got a job on tomorrow so will see what happens then and see if pump is hot/smelly!

I have had problems with the pump as it keeps 'P5'ing on the controller. If I turn off water at pole tap sometimes it won't come back on and 'P5' is showing. I have to remove from hose real and reconnect and it works.   I have messed around with the callibration and seemed to solve that problem or so I thought.

What should the callibration be set at? Could this be the problem?

I had the same happen to a leisure battery that was only a couple of months old, I had the battery tested and one
 of the cells had blown.

I guess its a pure freedom trolley / controller, if it is give them a bell and ask them about it. If you let the battery go flat you will shorten its life, if you let it get very flat then it will stay flat.

Strange how yesterday it was stop/start and today it just worked non stop for 3 hours. Oh well will see how it goes next week. Thanks for the replies and help.
