Hi, ive been getting my books up to date for the april 6th online filing. And i've been looking at my expenses.

I put my x's in wcp.And this is my fourth tax year and the first when i haven't had a major purchase such as a van or a system.So i'd like to think that this years expenses are more typical.

The figure is interesting because it gives me some idea of what it actually costs to do the jobs, 5k is £100 per week, or £20 per day.So depending on how many jobs i do each job costs me between one and two pounds, probably £1.50.(this doesn't include depreciation on major assets- this sounds a bit grand i mean my van and system)

What are your expense totals? And how much does each job cost you?

Sorry i forgot to add one of my conclusions.

£1.50 per job isn't much, on a twenty, twenty five, or thirty pound job. On a six or eight pound job, and i still have some of these, it's quite a chunk.

You should do it on per hour worked, not per job as the above doesn't reveal a true reflection of the real cost.

I think that doing this per job is a very good idea as it makes you think about some of the jobs you take on. It is a figure that you can relate to. There was a thread on here a while back where someone worked out that if he divided total number of cleans into his annual expenses, each visit cost him £1.97 before wages were paid.

At the time I thought it was a really good indicator of costs but statistics are a proverbial fiddle that you can play any tune on.
 
We do collecting on a Friday night, and collecting is another cost, but if you add a collecting visit to the number of cleans your figure of £1.50 per call would be diluted and the cost of the clean would be less. But if we stick to the original method of expenses divided by number of jobs cleaned and ignore the collecting visits, we get a better idea of those who mess us around payment wise and how much they actually cost us.

I've strugled to catch up since christmass.I did the best, most liked jobs first.

Some jobs on the worksheet i ignored, i can't help it i didn't want to do them.They tended to be £8 eight weekly jobs, that i have to do the front and then drive round the back to do the rear.These are also the people who don't pay.

Today i bit the bullet and put inactive on about fifteen jobs.

I feel better, there wasn't a lot of money involved, but it was a hard thing for me to do because i feel guilty declining work,

Cab     £230 PW
Fuel     £150 PW
plus insurance, road tax, servicing, 2 sets of tyres a year, 2 sets front brake pads, replating every year, your licence. And that not counting unforseen major item failures like steering pumps, starter motors, alternators, gearboxes etc. Oh yes and I forgot, a new battery most years thats over £200

BUt presumably you will do alot more of the £6 jobs ie 33 of them say and then that is only .60 a job

Meaning your expenses are ten percent

Except that my mindset was to undertake all works to keep the schlapper busy.£15ph is okay if someone else does it.

I think some of you are snobs and look down on certain customers.If i'm asked i find it hard to say no.


As regards london taxi drivers don't they think the rest of buy fuel and insure vehicles.I know a tv celeb who does it as a nice earner on the side.He has his own show and writes best selling books- very often from ideas given to him by his fares.
