WHAT... Banning of Ladders
« on: March 04, 2011, 01:36:35 pm »
I keep reading on posts, They should ban ladders!! Why? And now you have thought about your answer. What will aerial fitters and roofers do then. I know loads off lads in these trade's. Roofers and aerial fitters are going higher up on there ladders than us trad guys.
OR IS THE BAN JUST FOR US TRAD GUYS SO IT GIVES WFP MORE WORK????
Daz mentioned some where about bring a licence scheme in.. So how much would you pay for a licence then. And to bring a licence in you will have to sit a course first so that you can use a ladder properly. How much would they charge for that? And how would you enforce it?
The goverment done this with the sia security licence and after about 7 years they are thinking about doing away with it.

ladders won't be banned for a long time as wfp is not a replacment for all window cleaning jobs but saying that i now use both wfp and ladder as tools to do my job to the best standards possible. ;D

I use wfp but have no problem using a ladder providing its in a correct and safe manner,I dont forsee any ban on ladders but if they do then I suppose im all for it,im also for the licence route.Something simple to gain one would be a fee along with a valid public liability certificate, thus stopping all the cowboys who nip to B&Q a £60 ladder and a few hand tools and out they go poaching work in the decent weather months. As for the trades like the roofers you mention whats wrong in using a tower or getting the ladder footed, all these regs and guide lines are there to stop the miss use of ladders i.e theyre not secure.

What gets my goat up is that you read posts about people and friends dying through falling of ladders. We all have sympathy and send our condolences to them. And I know they are highlighting the situation.
But come on guys we dont want to be hearing about this just b4 we go work. All us pro's always do a risk assesment on each visit or do we.
But how would you govern a licence system them? I agree with keeping out the cowboys.

The last thing we need is a licence it would be alots of money down the drain ask any scottish window cleaner they all moan about it on here because they pay for it and there are still people that clean windows without a licence.

i think they need to do a tv show on window cleaning they could call it

I don't come here to sell the courses, I just let you know they are available.

What "Team" is this then? There are moderators, and now a forum team?  What's an "unneccesary " comment? Are you one of this "Team" Jake?

I'm not on here all the time, sorry if I'm asking a silly question. By the way, if ladders are banned, it must be a British health & safety law. If I was using WFP, I couldn't give a toss what other WC's were using. It's their neck, not mine.

P.S. Can anyone join this team you're on about? :D

Ladders will never be banned, but they have been restricted under law for over 5 years now.

Unfortunately many here prefer to ignore this legislation,.. to make excuses & say it couldn't possibly apply to them. Working trad all day every day is possible within the law, but only in exceptional circumstances & with a great deal of thought & planning.

Best reply on here for a long time, and i agree 100% with what you are saying. shame most of the time there is no thought or planning, or complying with the law,

At the end of the day , ladders have been used for an age , it doesnt matter how safe you are on them , you can weigh up all the possible what ifs before you get your foot on the first rung , it may be footed by a mate or one of the many devices on the market at the moment but it still does not change the fact that when you are at the top of the ladder 6 foot or even a 60 foot one (if they made them ) you can still fall off the thing , no fault of your own , its called an accident !

Prime example , last week my bro called me , our old man , gettin on a bit , asked my bro to drop the borrowed ladder back so he could clean out his gutters , bro said no you aint going up a ladder at your age (not that age should matter of course )  ;D , give Rich a ring , you know he has the gutter vac .
This he did not do , so bro rang me as a matter of course , as a result i went round same day to do the chore , when i got there i went up my ladder to survey the gutter before getting the gear out , now i have been in the game for 15 years on and off  , when i got to the gutter i looked down and immidiately called myself an utter sharp object , ladder not footed , horrendous angle and to top it all my old man has one of those highly laquered imprinted concrete drives , what im trying to say chaps is .....ladders are safe if used in the correct manner , pure accident , loss of concentration , stupidity (in my case) , all play a vital part in the use of ladders they are no more dangerous than a flight of stairs .....and that is coming from a 100% wfp'er ..... another thought just hit me ....the last post i viewed on the subject showed the scene of death , ladder still in position , man sadly not , wonder what the ratio of ladder in position and man sadly not is ?

Just some food for thought guys ...

Aerial fitters and roofers are most definitely breaking the law working off ladders, but who is stopping them? The bloke who used to do our aerial has gone into retirement because of the law but there are still blokes out there fitting aerials.

I am about 85% wfp, still use ladders for the rest, I can't imagine ladders ever being banned.

What you have to remember we are only up a ladder for a couple of minutes,  where roofers, aerial fitters and even painters are up a ladder much longer and they usually tie the ladders of, securing them against slip etc...
