if i was laying block paving i would want a perfectly flat lump of wood to level my sand out.
Since i am only a window cleaner i dont mind using a 'bent stock' brush AS IT DOESNT MAKE 1 LITTLE BIT OF DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!
