Hello everyone,

A bit of advice would be great on my predicament. I want to start a window cleaning business but my girlfriend is Australian and the likelyhood is that at some point I might have to live over there.

So my question is, How long would I need to devote to a window cleaning business to make it worthwhile? My own personal view was minimum 3-5 years. I need to weigh up whether its worth starting here in the UK or not.

Also does anyone know what window cleaning is like in Australia? Can you earn similar to UK?

Cheers,

Caleb

Thanks mate, Ive started another thread, so hopefully he'll see that.

As for starting a UK window cleaning business what do you think is the minimum period required to make it worthwhile?

Once you start mate you wont want to give it up. I started 24 years ago and I'm still loving it!! But in your case I would try and build up a good round then in 5 years time sell it for a good price. You'll then have money for your airfayre etc.

To devote to window cleaning from day one through to when you either retire or not, it be a life time of been devoted to something that you love and enjoy.

If your devoted you could spend sometime to generate enough domestic customers earning a decent wage within six months least, and if your thinking more like commercial work then it is more competitive will be harder to get a decent round up. So best bet to is to aim for domestic and for the future aim to get commercial work.

Hope this gives you some idea to starting a round up and the best of luck for the future in either way you go as you make your own goals in life.  :) :)

I really want to go for it, and Im considering doing it the traditional way initially to save on set up costs before switching onto WFP.

Is it a realistic expectation to pick up 1 customer a day if canvassing all day?

Hey Caleb - It's Andy :)

Do you have a budget for some WFP equipment? If you do then go WFP straight away, but learn traditional at the same time.

Have you seen any more WFP vans for sale?

Hi mate,

I would prefer to go WFP straight away but the reality is that I havent got the cash to do that. I think I will buy from pure freedom though. It looks like I could get everything I need from them for £1300 ex VAT. Thats the DIY route that you recommended.

The plan is to start canvassing hard and if after the first month its all going well, go for the WFP system.

Im aiming at a minimum of picking up £25 of new work a day, but obviously would like double that. Do you think thats acheivable?

Also what hours would you canvass?

Cheers,

Caleb

if i was you id hit the streets the day after getting my ladder and mop n squeegee .  try looking around for old georgian style windows-nobody likes doing those so easier to get a toehold  starting on that type.

one other tip- --if you buy a brand new ladder, clean it first thoroughly in soapy water.every ladder ive bought has had a thin film of oil on the alloy. = very slippy RUNGS  :o

have your gear ready, go door knocking then clean them the same day.
That way you earn as you build up, also don't give them a chance to change there mind  8)

Hey Fella, the more you knock doors the more you will get. Best time to knock on doors is between 1630hrs- 19.30hrs.
Do this solid  week in week out, you will soon build a decent round. But its down to you and put yourself about. Do your own leaflets on the PC, and away you go. Clean during the day and canvas in the evening.

Thanks for the advice lads. Seeing as I have no customers as of yet Im thinking about canvassing from 10.00am in the morning until 7.30pm\8.00pm at night to start with. I know its going to be tough, but from what people have been telling me its all about patience and perseverance.

I will focus on going back on the people I didnt find in during the day in the evening hours.

Sound good?

Anyone know how many leaflets Id need for say a month's canvassing?

Cheers,

Caleb

yes it is worth starting
read this - http://www.wfp-brush.co.uk/resources/book
then sell your business when you move
if you follow half of what is said in the book
then work hard, even if you sell after one year you will get more cash
than if you try to build  the business yourself over 2 years
