How good is the merlin? pros and cons?
« on: January 07, 2011, 09:00:40 pm »
I am currently using a system from a well known brand and due to the weather (freezing)I am having problem after problem.

I see the merlin is a very cheap option and I am thinking about getting one with a 1000 litre storage tank in the garage with the RO unit and filters to stop freezing and then a 650 litre tank in the van to work with.

Does anyone else do this? Any advice? I am at the end of my tether!

they have a high waste ratio, so if you are on a water meter you would be better off going for something else.

Merlins are great if you have decent tap pressure,.. go below 40psi and the output tds rises rapidly,..

True,.. I had to bite the bullet & buy a pumped RO because the council here have reduced my tap pressure after the recent thaw/burst pipes fiasco.  ::) ::)

Its in the buy & sell section,..  ;)

Cheers guys.
I think I am just gonna take everything out the van and pipe it up myself to a static tank.

My flow rate reader has broke so how would I control how much goes to waste and how much goes to tank? Is there anything out there you would recommend?

Also what do you think is the best pipe work to use? Pushfit?

What is the waste ratio of a Merlin, and what would be better than it?

We took one of our systems out of the van and turned it into a static sysem in the unit, best move we've made in a long time.  As for Merlin, depends on how much water you need and if you're on a meter, better to have a 40 40 RO but you have to cut your cloth to fit.

i think they are 70% waste but someone make correct me on that, but it is high, if you have a good tap pressure and the money gor for the 4040 setup like ian said, they are fast and the waste ratio is lower than the merlin.

Ok mate. so you don't know what percentage of waste the merlins produce and you don;t know whats better than it. Is that right?

you are right that i dont know the exact waste ratio of the merlin, but when i was setting up i looked into them and that is the figure that i have in my head for them and reading on here what people say about them.

But you are wrong that i dont know what is better, like i said in my post the 4040 is better than the merlin, please read post properly before you make sarkey comments.

I'm not making a sarkey comment. I quizzed you because you said what i've seen posted on here before, so i thought you might know. You said the Merlin is high waste. Now my partner has a Merlin and i have a 40/40 they 'seem' to be about the same to me. I'll measure over the weekend if you like?
Turns out you don't know but you are just perpetuating advice you've heard. Thats fine.

Merlins run at 70% waste, 30% pure,.. worse with low pressure.

If waste is an issue, a 400gpd Pumped RO with the 4 membranes in series is probably the best you'll get.

sorry, took the question the wrong way, from doing alot of research on the forums, everyone with the merlins said that the waste ratio was very high, so that is what im basing my facts on, i have a 4040, and i know that the waste on mine is alot lower than the waste figures that i have read on the merlins

how much are 40/40?

the housing is about £150, and the filter is about £280, but you also need pre filters.

Thats exactly what i've read Lee. I'm not so sure there is a big difference. I'll measure it up if i can over the weekend. I know its possible to turn your waste down really low on a 4040, i'm not so sure how good it is for the unit though as i'm pretty sure when i checked specs for all of them that they are designed to produce about 25% product with 75% going to waste?

I will have to try and do an exact measurement on my 4040 to.
