How do you keep the van warm overnight?
« on: December 17, 2010, 05:06:09 pm »
What do you do to stop things freezing up overnight?

Are there any good heaters that won't cost too much to run?

Cheers.

Terry.

People use oil burners I think?

Here is a DIY solution (use at your own risk) that will keep your water nice and warm:

I use a £10 fan heater. Works for me. Though I'll worry about the cost when bill comes!!

To save on electricity bills, i put a hot water bottle by my pump in the van last thing at night (and sometimes during the day on really cold days) so the housing doesn't freeze and crack. That's the most important thing to prevent freezing. Then i put an electric greenhouse heater (works well in moist enviroments) in the van first thing when i wake up for 30-40 mins...

ps i have a static system so RO not in van...

I don't.  I just drain the pipes to prevent water expanding and cracking the pump.  I can't park cloise enough to get a cable out there and I don't trust greenhouse heaters.  However, there is no RO in there so it's a bit less critical for me.
In the little unit I rent where the RO is, I have an electric greenhouse heater on frost stat setting.

I have never tried it but i wonder if one of those heated "belts" that you put around your home brew would be a good idea for the pump.. From memory they use very little elec.
