Most insurance documents have a specific clause forbidding the transport of any highly flammable substance. This could be petrol, diesel or gas (amongst other things).
The quantity is irrelevant,.. even a gallon of petrol for your lawnmower voids your cover in most cases.

This affects DIY gas systems, as well as any diesel system with a separate fuel tank.

My insurer wasn't bothered in the slightest about a 650 litre tank or the gas heater system,.. they were simply caught up on the gas bottle.
I have researched it, and in Ireland it is completely legal to carry a huge amount of gas without any special license etc,.. once its secured in an upright position,.. so its not a law that is the issue, simply the insurers assessment of risks.
I have cover now with Quinn insurance, who were more expensive than many of the quotes I got, but are happy to give me cover for the gas bottle. :)

trevor have you had any problems with insurance.?

no problems ronnie as the purefreedom system runs from the vehicle fuel tank so it isnt an issue for the insurance company, we where with A plan but when they qouted the price was ridiculous in the end we went with alexander swan it wasnt the cheapest but was very reasonable and they offer a courtesy vehicle with wfp system if your vehicle is off road due to an accident.

I rang mine (autonet) as I was thinking of getting an L5.

I explained that it wasn't a permanent modification to the van, just a freestanding, portable propane water heater, and that it would only be carried for a small portion of the year when it would be needed.

He went away and asked his superior, and then came back to ask what size gas bottle. I said 11kg, (off the top of my head) and he said that'd be fine!

I asked for a note to be put on the system and if it'd be possible to get it in writing, to which he said yes..  (three days ago, not heard anything yet though!)

So just ring and find out. They may not be so pedantic.

i phoned mine yesterday to ask about carrying gas.(ordered perters hotwash). it turned out that i wasnt covered for having a water tank in the van! was with ARRIVA. spent an hour on phone with admiral eventually got an insurer who would cover tank and gas. cost £100 more for year, although this extra was for tank, not gas. only had to inform that i was carrying gas.
i'd done 2 compare sites before that and none came up with cover because of tank.
