Is this too simple????
« on: December 07, 2010, 01:55:08 pm »
Hi lads and lasses.

After going through the same hassles and rigmorole as everyone else on here each morning defrosting everything and filling tanks I had a thought; it does happen sometimes ;D

Now, like most on here I guess, I have a cold water tap on my outside wall from which I fill my tank each day; is there any reason I can't install another tap but from the hot water pipe under my sink; giving me hot water flowing in to my tanks???

Would warm water going through the pump damage it????

Even if I filled 50/50 from both taps; that way the water wouldn't be too hot.

It seemed obvious to me but am I way off the mark with this idea???

Your opinions would be welcome :)

I guess it depends on how much hot water you can produce before it starts going cold.
The pen is mightier than the sword (and a lot easier to write with!)

I did that on Saturday morning, it was just -4 but it did work up to a point although the water did freeze on larger glass panels, water on the ground was a block of ice by the time I had done the window.

If you have a combi boiler then the amount of hot water would be unlimited. On the other hand though if you had one with a copper tank, you would only get enough the size of a bath.

I guess we can't stop the water freezing once it lands on the floor; I just wanted a way of preventing hoses, jets, etc from freezing for a while.

The hot water going through the pump was okay then yes???

My hot water wont run out; I have no water tank in the house; it goes through a boiler first, so even half filling with hot water is fine even if a bit expensive!!!

filling will be fine,  you could fill it all up, as the hottest water will be at top of tank and by time it gets to window it will be luke warm

some say that u cant put water in a pump,  but i do this every day and never had a problem

it is easy to fit a new tap,  u can even connect to ur hot water connecting on washing machine  if it is easy to get to

i,ve got hot and cold taps outside, my boiler is a combi , so heats on demand.

had the hot installed years ago , to fill 25 ltr barrells in winter for trad work,

my water is over 290 tds, so filling van tank with hot water  is out of the question.

I would have thought warm water would be fine, hot might slightly different. But if it got you out of trouble for a week it would be worth killing a pump to be able to a few hundred quids worth of work.

Back in the day.......

PRE - WATERFED POLE

I had a hot and cold tap outside my house.
We used to fill up 25 litre barrells with hot water- so as we could wash out our scrims etc. The water stayed fairly warm until the end of the day.
We only had Ford Escort vans - no insulation.

In theory you should be ok.

the only down fall of this idea would be your filters they will only take a certain high temperture  worth checking out

Regarding pump

http://www.depcopump.com/datasheets/shurflo/8090-902-248.pdf

Max temp rating is 82 degrees, youll be fine with pump. Ionics systems circulate the water round so they have hot pumping through.

Cheers mate; that was my biggest concern. I don't want to do something for a week or two at the expense of my kit.

I have been a bit thick though; whilst taking every precaution to ensure that my WFP kit stays frost free and working properly I neglected my carpet machine; sat in the van all lonely, quiet and bloody freezing. Went to use it this morning and my pump is frozen :'(

I've bought it inside tonight and hopefully it'll thaw out and work okay, but knowing my luck it's f***ed!!!

I didnt put my heater in van other night and went to pump in morning, pressed switching and there was nothing, not even a buzz. So i checked all my connections and it was just the fact it was so frozen. Got the hairdryer on it and it was fine so dont worry mate, should be fine ;)

All my wfp stuff has been insulated in my van and in the garage, right up to the outside tap. Been minus 2-6 in my back garden for two weeks now. Tonight my outside tap which was insulated has now frozen up. Took it apart and it's frozen right back inside the pipe.

Had to resort to filling up from combi boiler in house via hose through kitchen window to van running through a DI bottle in the van into tank. This extreme cold weather is an absolute nightmare where I live but not where I'm working during the daytime as I work away from home. (I'm too near the moors where I live unfortunately). Glad the majority of my work is on the coast where it's warmer temperatures.
