Is anyone out there softening their water with a magnetic water softener?

I've been looking at these the last few days and am tempted to try one, no moving parts, no flushing with salt, no maintanence.

Ian, I bought half a dozen of the balls for an IBC last year from lakeland plastics, they are still in there, they dont appear to do anything. But the mains version that fits round a supply pipe/tap might.

All these do is stop the limescale forming on pipework and inside boilers etc..they dont soften the water

Are you sure that's all they do?  Anyway isn't that what we are looking for them to do, reduce the level of limescale build up in the RO filter, therefore maintaining it's efficiency.

I fitted one to cover the whole house a couple of years ago. It's just after the stopcock. I live in a hard water area and can't say I've noticed any difference to the taps liming up etc.

Waste of money I think. Won't buy one again. I think the electric ones are supposed to be better.

I want another automatic water softener for the house when I can afford one. I got one in the garage for my static system and washing machine already but it doesn't cover the house because I teed off the supply under the drive before the house.

They are supposed to cslightly hange the shape of the calcium molecule from a round sticky one to an oval like a grain of rice.

They are useless,.. completely. Don't waste your money!

I've got one plugged in to the electric - hang on whilst I have a look at my molecules.

We have had a electric one for yrs, took me agaes to find out what it was  :
It was fitted before we bought the house.Don't think it does much though.

Not sure if it's the same thing, we had an electric device at our old house a "Salamander Cracker Scale Inhibitor".

It wasn't cheap but it definitely stopped the kettle and saucepans furring up as bad, which was the main reason we got it.  Seemed to become slightly less effective over time, but still seemed to do "something".
