Does a hot water system allow you to work in this weather?
« on: December 01, 2010, 08:23:37 pm »
Can you still work in this weather with a hot water system?

That is assuming you can get to the job with the snow and ice.

I was just interested as so many of us with cold systems are not able to work.

I suppose I am asking if we are all losing money then is it worth the extra money to either diy or buy a hot water system for the money we are missing out on?

Cheers

some do but i think they cause a major slip hazzard when it freezes on pavement, even when they salt after if its not done thouroghly it still freezes but i guess untill a few slip and some claims are put in we wont know for sure how the H and S will view the matter.
better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove any doubt

Worked today in the Snow, no problem,  (thermo pure system)had chain around the van wheels and most public were noticing, it was great, because every one could notice pccom sign on the van, good way of advertising , check out my video on my face book.

If the snow allows you to get around then you can work with cold water

Trevor that'll still happen with cold. It isnt something that can be directly attributed to a hot system.

The thing is do hot water systems allow you to work when cold does not?

Other than keeping jets unfrozen, hoses warm does hot perform in any way that allows you to carry on when cold is no longer able to function?

When the temps are in the + during the day and say -2 at night...cold will continue to work and will not present much of an issue either work wise or creating a potential slip hazard...

But what if the night temps are -3, -4, -5, -6 and colder at night and hang around 0 during the day? will a hot system allow you to continue working? the trouble with this scenario is that nothing gets a chance to heat up so the cold just remains cold and any water added to it just freezes or those surfaces which are that cold will just freeze the water that is put on it.

For those that actually use hot systems it would be very kind if you could watch how your system functions and tells us non-hotters whats the story.

Cheers
Dave.

we paid 8k for our thermopure system...........simple reason being that in 2008 with the 2 weeks of at christmas and 2 weeks that our cold water system was frozen we had a month of work....which was tough

last winter we did not lose a day down to snow or ice cos of of the thermopure

we are the only w/c cleaning company round here that use hot water....this week we are the only window cleaners that have been workin

even had a fone call from the technical service manager of a housing development company that we are contracted to, telling us that all their tennats were made up to have their winowds cleaned in this weather and he also passed on their huge thanks for us gritting all the pathways and key outside areas

all thatnk to out hot water Ionics Thermopure system

stevenpaulmatthews...it looks like you have a full winter and a start of one so this more than likely means you have some very useful information up your sleeve...

Could you explain a little more about your experiances of use in different conditions esp this time of year and the temps we have.

I and I'm sure many others here would be grateful to hear of your experainces..

Cheers
Dave.

As yet i'm not convinced that HOT will keep you working that much longer than with cold.

I have cleaned the last couple of days with cold - no problems no freezing - another w/c who has HOT has been
cleaning a relatives house a few streets away and have been told her windows froze over just as the w/c was leaving.

SO is the Hot super cooling and more likely to freeze ? or is it i use high flow rate so couldn't freeze ?

I think Hot will be the way to go, but with our climate its a NICE to have rather than NEED to have - unless we go into a early ice age.......

If you prepare well - keep heater in van and pipes unfrozen then cold will last virually as long as a hot system, once the weather is too bad you cant get to jobs anyway.

sorry mate not true. We got 4 days in working with hot this week. (could of got 5 but it was a blizzard and thought i was taking the pee a bit) ;D my cold van has been sat there doing nothing. if both were cold at the sub zero temps they would both of been sat there most of the week.

Steve,

i accept it makes life easier, nicer to have hot running through the pipes than cold, but if your
walking away from a place and the windows are freezing up, is that a good impression to make ?

then throw in blizzrds, dangerous road conditions a chance of breaking down in the middle of nowhere...

I'm not against Hot, but weighing up costs Vs loss, only something like the L5 would make sense (for me) - so far i am only
1/2 day behind so lucky to be where the weather is not extreme.

I have a thermapure and I have only worked 1 day this week,   yes in freezing cold conditions you can work with hot because although in my case it comes out of the van port at 60"-70 degrees by the time its run through the hose and down the brush and out of the jets its about 45 degrees,   so no shock to the glass.

its always good to start with a big job because if your next job isn't to big there's enough hot water left in tank to do it.

it also rinses well on the windows and I can honestly say Ive never had an issue with water freezing on floor under windows.
It also keeps the hosereel nice and flexy and the brushhead bristles nice and soft.

however I do a lot of work in the stick and no matter how good your hot system is it cant clear country roads oe side streets,  if theres safe access then its a great system is the best way to sum it up.

Ive still had to keep an oil filled radiator in the van for the last 3 days.

in cold weather they really come into their own, especially the last couple of hours of daylight when temps begin to drop quick..

on a whole I'm happy with it for its benefits and glad I bought it back in 2006 but if I was gonna buy another I would defo look for cheaper options as I know there are some massive price differences out there.

Could someone with a hot system clarify what temperatures exactly you have worked in, this morning it was -9 will it work at that temp?
