« on: November 26, 2010, 05:16:51 pm »
Hi all :)

2 of my sections are just spinning around now as the clamp looks as though has come unstuck off the pole, any one had this happen and whats the best way to fix them???

If youve had your pole less than 12 months then give Gardiners a ring and they'll send some more out for you. Same thing happened to me last week. Clamps came next day.

Apologies for this having happened. If the pole is less than 6 months old please give the Office a ring (01726 66400) on Monday morning and we can arrange to collect the pole and sort this out in the workshop for you (5 day turn around). Alternatively we can send out some rapid adhesive and isopropyl wipes to you if you would rather fix it quickly yourself.

Araldite will also do the job well, it will need to be prepared and applied correctly - if done so, it will fix it completely. If you want to give this a go with Araldite then please follow the instructions below to ensure correct adhesion:

Split the pole sections (remove lever set, prise open clamp jaws and slide section out carefully past joint stop)
Remove the loose clamp from the section
Scrape off any loose glue and abrade the inside of the clamp surface and the end of the pole removing any loose glue and dust
Clean off dust with Isopropyl, if available, (spectacle cleaning fluid etc.), if not use a dry cloth and rub well.
Apply a layer of glue to both surfaces
Twist together to ensure full coverage
Leave to dry (ensure that each section is propped upright, without resting clamp against anything and ensure clamp is set straight on section)
Remove any excess glue from the inside of the clamp - a sharp kitchen knife is ideal for this
To re-insert sections into newly glued clamp, prise open clamp jaws and slide section and joint stop tape carefully past the jaws of the clamp, then assemble with lever set

It is worth taking the extra few minutes to follow the above steps as will give a much better chance of adhesion and also will prevent excess glue getting on any of the carbon sections.

Thanks very much for your help!!

It's a very easy fix to do yourself, I wouldn't send it back personally. I've had it happen on other poles too, I always carry some two part adhesive in the van just incase. ;)

This does not normally happen, but has affected a small percentage of poles sold over the last 6 months. If it does happen we obviously will rectify this for clients. Gluing of the clamps is now being carried out in the factory to a different assembly regime and using different adhesives so that we can make sure that 100% of poles do not experience glue failure. It is annoying to both our clients and also to ourselves when this happens - we believe that this issue has now been fully resolved.

It happens with all poles, i wouldnt single Gardiners poles out for coming unstuck or breaking.Funnily enough one of my CLX 27's has just had a clamp spin this week, its two months old. I re glued it .It hasn't happened yet to my other CLX 27, nor my two CLX 18's (which are older). It has happened on every extel pole i've had and some Facelift poles. And my brodex clamps just worn out the lever action.
Out of interest and for comparisons sake, what would be your personal recomendaion for a pole with a good fool proof clamp?

hi wasn't aiming to single out there pole was just giving a honest answer to the question really as it has happened with there poles for years from my xtels and when i brought my slx last year it happened the next day with 3 of the clamps and was told then the problem was sorted but it still happens even now to there new poles like i said not knocking them but it does happen, cant comment on other suppliers poles..as for a comparison i couldn't really say as ive only ever bought poles from gardiners for the last 6 years and currently use the slx and will be getting the 30ft one after xmas.

I'm always sceptical when i see complaints about Pole clamps. Mostly because when i see them being used they do get abused. i.e letting a fully extended pole down under its own steam at full belt then it smacks on the stopping clamp and then they get suprised when the clamp fails. (i'm not suggesting you do this BTW, or that there is no clamps that don't have enough glue on). Then you've got the 'lets glue them on really tight ' brigade, and if you glue them on so hard, replacing a clamp without having to hacksaw a small portion of your pole away is not an option. There has to be a trade off. Carrying glue for all pole clamps for me is a neccesity, to be able to keep working with them, abusing them and replacing them. They are the weak point, or rather wearable point in any pole. If a clamp is glued to good to a pole and you break it, you're losing a few inches off your pole should you damage the clamp.
