Forgot to mention Monday!
« on: November 26, 2010, 07:45:22 am »
Hello All,

I forgot to mention this Monday just gone.

I was just arriving at a customers at around 9am, parked up the van where I normally park it, and as always take my WFP around to the back of the property.  When all of a sudden out of nowhere one of the dogs (german shepherd) to be exact comes lunging out of the dog flap and went for my face, luckily for me it only bit into my arm as I had put it up to protect myself.  Then and only then did I here the customer shout at it to come in did it release me.

The customer after it happened could not be more apologetic, as I went on to explain that I had sent her a text the night before to make sure the dogs where locked inside!  She went on to say that her husband had not got the text until later on the day and consequently forgot to tell her to lock the dog flap so the dogs could not get out.

The morning ended up with me being made a cup of coffee and her apologising profusely offering to buy me a new coat for my troubles, which I said no to and don't worry about it, the dog was really only doing its job and protecting the property.

Anyway, it ended with me finishing the window cleaning on the property and leaving with a bite mark on my arm!  I left thinking lucky for me it was cold and I had my coat on at the time.

The end.

I've never been bitten, and personally I think its all down to attitude. I'm willing to bite back & the dog picks up on the fact that any attack on me will not be worth it. Lets face it, they are smaller & dumber (usually!),.. if one did attack for real you might get some nasty cuts but you know you'd eventually come out the winner. If they growl, I growl back and make a lunge for them,.. show them who is boss straight away! Once they back off, turn your back to them (Not for too long) to let them know they you do not consider them a threat.
Dogs are never naturally aggressive, its only ever down to the owners & training IMO. Trained guard dogs are the only ones I'd be cautious of as they tend to work in packs!

Don't get me wrong though, I love dogs. Its just dealing with aggressive ones where I take the hardline attitude.

I have no sympathy for these type of people, the only reason they invite you in and make you a cup of tea is they are worried you may sue them. They are concerned for themselves not you.
If a dog is likely to hurt someone it should never be allowed to come into contact with people. They obviously knew it was a danger yet were so disinterested they ignore a text warning them someone will be on their property.
If it was me, I would report them immediately.

It could be a child next!!!

I always knock on the door or ring the bell if Iknow they have a dog bigger than a hamster. A few of my customers have huge dogs and most are OK but one of them just eyes me through the window. Gives me no doubt what he would do if he could get at me  :(

It does my head in when owners big up their dogs by making a huge fuss at keeping them away from me as i turn up. All they are doing is emphasizing the (non) fact that i am a threat.
I've been bitten twice becaue of this.
Much better to let the dog come and sniff around. It's understandable that they see us as a threat carrying ladders or poles, but once they've had a good sniff and realise we ain't going to attack them, they're usually good as gold afterwards.

I went to a new house once, big house, had a look round priced etc, fine do it. So opened gates, pulled hoses round getting on fine. Get to the front then women comes running out, "youve let the dogs out"

Look down the garden and theres a alsation and a rot weiler...and a big one at that. She calls them over so i help calling them and they came bounding over. She turned and walked away, the dogs both looked at me and growled, i just ignored and turned my back hoping as Nathanal said they would not feel threatned...however, the rot weiler went for my leg, the owner was no where to be seen!

Some weird reason the alsation was biting the rottie, anyway i pushed him off and he bit my arm and shook it, then my other arm, fortuantly never broke skin but ripped my jumper.

The owner just happened to call them and they went but had no idea id been attacked, i told her after and she was not in slightest bothered, got a little "oh sorry"

Nat i appreciate what your saying but im strong, stronger than most but that rot was something else, once it had my arm i could hardly do anything.

Spot on. I am big enough, 6'4" and 16 stone but you only need to see footage of a medium sized dog attacking either another dog or a person to realise you are going to get seriously chomped. They move faster than you can see!

Nathanael I dont often disagree with anything you write but on this occasion you are so far wide of the mark its untrue.

If a dog decided to have a go at you you would get a lot more than "a few cuts".
When i was in the army we had a dog demo, I was chosen to wear the suit and get chased down, let me tell you even though I was fully protected I was crapping myself. a dog is so fast you could not stop it if you tried.
unchecked it will rip you apart.
IMO anyone with a dog that may be a threat should be made to have them put down. too many children get maimed or killed every year to justify anyone keeping them.

I killed one too, a pit bull cross that attacked my grand daughter. As he went for her I went for him, luckily I got him by the throat, and I sure as hell wasn't going to let go while he was still moving.
My granddaughter was so lucky, the dogs top jaw got her across the top of the nose, the bottom jaw clamped on her mouth pushing out a couple of teeth.
I say she was lucky because today 20 years later, she only has one small scar.
My daughter got bit clean through the thumb when she was trying to prise open the dogs mouth. You become enraged in these situations, and I was determined that dog would die.
It made the front page of many papers at the time.
 "Grandad strangles pit bull terrier"
Understandable I suppose, I have had no time for dogs ever since, and now regard them as machines for turning good protein into excrement.

a full size poodle nipped my arm the other week. i was in the owners house, doing the insides

i have a spray bottle fixed to my belt for wetting my washer and i have found that a good jet of soapy water between the eyes  is a good leveller of an aggresive dog.
next time i see that poodle i will be giving it a shot in the face (out of the owners sight )

I was out leafleting and had to shove my finger ends through a letter box with the stiff bristles inside, without warning something grabbed my hand the i felt a searing pain up my arm, i tried to pull my hand out but without a bark or growl a jack russell had latched onto my middle finger and was trying to do some crocodile type death roll with it, i knocked on the door but nobody was home and with the letter box being more than half way up the door the dog was litterally hanging off my finger, i could feel its teeth scraping on the bone, in the end i had no choice but to rip my hand out, anyway after calmly walking back to the van with blood pumping everywere i had to shove the insides of my finger back in with a biro lid. one visit to casualty and a tetanus and iodine hand bath later the hole has almost healed! Tis was around 8 weeks ago. ;D i have to say i am a massive dog lover so never reported it!!!

If a dog bit me i would be straight onto the old bill and i would have it put down,

i hate dogs there disgusting creatures all they do is bark and poop and p everywhere and there owners treat them like children and not animals which they are.

there is no excuse for that dog biting you, it needs to be put down what if a small child wandered round the back of that house and the dog bit the childs face?

the animal needs to be f***ing shot!
