I have used a company called ttnc. I bought a local area no to me that ended in the last five digits of my mobile for £25 and I put £25 calling credit on it. All I do is when it rings end the call and ring them back from my mobile and it's cost me 8 pence in 12 months.

I would NOT recommend getting an 0800 or 0845 number.

People are reluctant to call them, especially from a mobile as they are never included in call allowance packages, and therefore the customer always has to pay.

Also, people generally view them with suspicion as many rogue tradesman uses them to hide behind.

A customer likes to see a proper landline number, with area code.  It tells them there is a real phone line, in a real building, with someone answering it.

(even if thats not actually true, it gives them a sense of security)

Just my opinion.

i was going to get a bt line connected but they wanted over £100 because the line hasn't been used for years to get a virtual number will only cost around £20 conection plus a £5 monthly fee  ;D

www.ttnc.co.uk are great. Had them for 3 years. Wouldn't bother with 0800 just get the geographic numbers.

With ttnc you track absolutely everything and hardly anyone bothers to ring the 0800 no and the ones that do are normally cheapskates who won't accept your quote anyway. TTNC don't have contracts all pay as u go,.

Just checked my account. Got 5 numbers, only one is an 0800 which no one much rings. Spent £117 over 3 years plus the £25 plus vat fee one off for each tel no.

I use an 0845 for mine.  It only costs 3.5ppm for a customer to ring but some of them won't know that due to misinformation in the media that seems to lump them in with 0870 numbers.
I paid £200 for usage of the number as it's a more memorable one.  I also pay 2.5ppm to receive calls.  However, I have never yet exceeded the minimum charge of £2 a month.  I know it's a poor deal compared to many out there but I'm tied in unless I want to lose the number that I paid for.
I only got the number in the first place because I thought I was going to be moving house some time back but it didn't happen (and won't now).  It would have been a trivial matter to point the 0845 at the new number.  So what I am doing now is giving landline, virtual number, and mobile.  That way they have a choice of which to phone.
One drawback to having a more memorable number is that it has similarities to the one used by Devon and Cornwall police.  I get some pretty odd calls on a regular basis  ;D - including a voice mail message from a probation officer stating someone's name and address which was meant to be confidential - oops!!  I did actually reply to that one as it sounded urgent.
