do we need to make a really good profit? and whats wrong with just making a living?

I have friends who are policemen, managers, plumbers, and i work less hours with less stress and earn more money why is'nt this enough? why should I aim higher.

i make a living, I'll never be really rich but I'm a lot better off than most of the Uk population.

No you can't. But some still try and you can’t fault them for it.

Mike and a handful of others on here are superb wealth businessmen stuck in the wrong game.

you see its liker this you are all great guys on here and i have respect for evry one

but i was doing some maths and

equipment plus van average = £15.000over 3 years

say you do £500 per week X 52 weeks  a year - £26.00 K

not  a lot really you have to  take out costs petrol chemicals, advertising, accountant  etc

i think you would need to turnover at least £1500k a week

that way you might have a hope ??

what you reckon

I think you're on the right lines but you would have to do £1000 per week. Many of us do that in a day, but not every day and it's what you do over a year that counts, I think £50,000pa  is a minimum if cc is your main income. Less than that and you may be better off in a job with sickness pay, paid holidays and company car(Aah I remember it well!) that's assuming you could get a job of course.
Many of the guys on here earn much less than that but it's still more than they could earn in a job, don't criticice them for it at least they're working, many of the UK population don't contribute to the national wealth, they only take from it.

You can set yourself up a lot cheaper than £15000, I started with a 2nd hand portable and an escort van. It takes time, as it does with any business to build up and gain a good reputation.
It all depends on the individual and there circumstances.
You can make money at anything if you have the right mind set.

as Bob the Builder says "YES YOU CAN."

and as my dad who is also called Bob, he made a fortune from carpet cleaning, and yes made a million,  its getting the right system & the right price, and quantity.

If you think you will make a fortune in a couple of years in business then forget... business, not just carpet cleaning.

Any business needs to be built over time. If you work hard and do a lot of things right then you have the choice to take it easy and coast along earning more than your bank manager or go for it and build a proper business where others work it and you run it.

At least that's what Alltec told me.
It's not expensive, you just can't afford it.

May I contribute. If you purchase £15k of equipment and van and equipment new, that in theory will depreciate half its value in the first year. So here goes....

£500 per week gross takings.
-£156.25 deprecation.
-£50.00 fuel
- £4.48 Road Tax
- £ 8.00 Insurance
- £ 6.00 Chems
- £25.00 Advertising

So if you did £500 per week your taxable income would be £250.27 per week.

Gross - £24000
Net - £12000
After Tax and NI - £8400

So if your only taking £500 per week and have an average set up your disposable annual income is only £8400!!

To stand a chance and make a basic living, you need to be taking around £850 every week on average. And should target £170 per day takings. If you fail to hit target one day, move mountains to ensure you make up the deficit on the next.

Advertising £25 I think this is where you went wrong. Even if you don't do traditional advertising you would be hard pressed to get anywher on £100 a month.

The other thing is equipment costs. I don't understand people who buy new kit when they haven't even cleaned a carpet. I wouldn't even buy a new portable to start. Then WITH THE CASH YOU MAKE go out and get a decent 2nd hand truckmount at a 3rd of the price of a new one. Then the world is your oyster at £50-£100 an hour.

I'm basing £500 gross on what Karl stated in his post.

I would suggest that you can't earn a living out of any business that only turns over £ 500 a week - assuming that you do pay your tax.

Thats great advise Wayne... That's exactly what I have done. Ran a second hand portable then got a second hand truckmount for less than most new portables.

Karl

why would you want to clean carpets when you have your marble business? On my floor info site the marble video is one of the top plays i have. this shows demand for the service.

why?

looking at the hits on the many site i have they are down by a massive amount. again showing that demand is down.

I have never had such bad response from leaflets as i have lately.

my database again response is down.

I have no shame is saying that its hard for me at the moment.

But I am optimistic and am planing and making changes as i believe that the hock in carpet cleaning is that when you do work you earn much more than many professionals do.
