VAN - Condensation / frost
« on: November 21, 2010, 10:47:04 am »
Hi,

I have a lot of condensation on the ceiling of my van, which turns to ice on cold nights/mornings,

i use a heater sometimes for the bad nights, but is there anything i can put on the van ceiling to prevent this?

and maybe insulate it a bit,
will this be any good below?

thanks.

The biggest problem with insulation is that you can make the situation worse if you don't get it right. If condensation still forms under/behind the insulation, then unless it's really vented it won't dry up & the problem becomes more so.

It's like insulating pipes, if they still freeze then they will take 10 times longer to defrost with insulation on them.

We can't seem to win with a simple solution here.

The best thing I've found (but I live in a private hamlet in the middle of nowhere) is to run the van for 30 mins or so in a morning with the fans pointing into the back. If you've a solid bulkhead then either cut a window out of it or drill some venting holes.

Hope that helps ;)

Apart from ventilation, if your heater is not providing enough heat for the van then this will also produce condensation.

True also. When it's really bad I have mine running for up to an hour before I set off! It may cost a quid in diesel but it allows me to work. ;)

Thanks,

well,i have just put some on the ceiling,

i have a bulk head also,...and i have attached a tumble dryer flexi pipe to the floor blower in the passenger side,...cut the vent ribs in the metal bulkhead, and popped the pipe through the hole........now i have full heat in the rear ,

good for mornings, and also good whilst driving from job to job on them below freezing days.

Does anyone have experience of rotating van vents as a solution?

Yes, I had one in my old van & never got condensation on the roof. Haven't got one on this van & I now get condensation. ;)

However, I didn't fit the vent, it came with the van.

I was going to fit one of these, but there isn't enough height between the roof and the rack.  :'(

That's the one I had but mine was all black. I had roof bars so no probs. However, it did protrude higher than the bars so I couldn't have anything along the centre of the roof bars, which was OK as ladders went to side, if you get my drift?

I don't have a roof rack, so I might give one of these a try.

One of the problems with the Hiace is that it's made so well that it seems pretty much hermetically sealed, so once it's damp it stays damp.

I seem to remember somebody said a couple of years ago that a bowl or bucket of salt crystals in the back of the van would absorb the moisture, not tried it myself but would be interesting to hear from anybody else that has heard of anything similar

my mate told me that, he does it in his van but he uses a bucket or rice, same with salt pots in cafe`s they have rice in them to take moisture out ;D
