Is your job just a job?
« on: November 20, 2010, 05:42:29 pm »
Wow, lookout, second question I've asked in a whole 24 hr period!

Is your job, 'just a job'?  I mean, if so, what they hell are you ding it for?  The cash?  If not, why is it so flippin' great that you totally fulfilled and a happy bunny?

Idiotic selfish replies only, please, with no pretence to help anyone reading.

Some days I love it. (Well most really).

Other I could quite happily burn all my equipment and look for an alternative career.

Especially in the winter when I've just replaced a valve, only for it to pour out water down your leg 5 minutes later. Grrrrrrrr

I have been in this game for nearly 14 years. I have never wanted to make it big, so as long as I earn enough to get by, I am happy.

What I like about it is the almost complete absence of stress, the flexibility that it offers, and the customers I am blessed with.  :)

I find it's full of pulls and pushes - not just on the pole!

I mean, somedays/hours, it's the best, others... a bit crappy but not too bad considering.

if the predictions are right about cutbacks affecting so many of us, we may be the first to lose our jobs. would be cool to know the right time to sell up eh?

im starting it for all kinds of reasons really, i like a bit of money in the back pocket and the fact of being my own boss is good i guess. also all the diff characters you meet can change from place to place. you might get a grumpy old granny to a flirty single mum lol  8), i see it as a job with perks i guess. my customers aint just custys there ppl i chat to now and then and i see them as a friend. dunno if thats the wrong attitude.

Exactly the right attitude in my humble opinion. If you get to become as friends with your customers, it will make you almost indispensible to them, especially if they are happy with the quality of your work  ;)

It's MY business; something I've done and to be proud of. God that sounds sad :-\

I do it because I want a decent standard of living for my family; nice holidays, money for treats, that kind of thing. I'm very money orientated, rightly or wrongly, and that's why I do it. I'm focused to reach where I want to be, and year on year see's a marked improvement in takings and the standard of living I can give my wife and kids.

I'm a chef by trade, learning my craft in the navy, but I'd be very hard pushed to earn what I'm earning in a kitchen - the wife just takes advantage of my cooking ability now ;)

So I do what I do because I know I can always improve as a business and earn more money; I couldn't say that if I worked for someone else :)

hi  guys
interesting subject, I have been I business game since I was 20 years of age, I had a coffee shop when I was 20 and I ran it for 5 years, money was good but it was so much stress and then I sold it and went restaurant business, which was more stress  and I sold that as well, so then I started the cleaning business, when you come to think of it, this is the one of the best business I have been in . Think about it, hardly any over head, get to have out door activity, so plenty of fresh air  which lot of business don’t get, hardly any stress because we choose our customers, in terms of working hours, it’s the best hours of work, including weekends off, and if you want to expand, well the sky is the limit in this business .

So I would say we all should be grateful to be in such a brilliant industry.

Therefore every day when I wake up to go to work, I am so happy  and grateful that I know for fact that I will meet new people and new challenges and this is the way we should all think of this job .(serving people) THE BEST WAY TO BE. :) :)
