any of you guys got an account at the co op?and do they show references?as im thinking of opening an account and using this for my tax bill.ill get more and more moving over to online bank transfer as cheques slowly get phased out.

The Co-op business banking service via FSB shows the references in full.  I imagine that there is a maximum number of characters allowed but it's a reasonable bet that this will not be less than 16 (the number of digits in a card number).
I use my incoming BACS payments as tax bill savings - though I did need to break into it to tax my van a while ago.
I don't know if their other business banking service (non FSB) truns on the same format.  I don't think that one is free.  FSB membership does cost but is worth it IMO.

Money to burn Paul, and you throw the rest at an accountant.

If you get a customer with a very common name like SMITH instead of charging them say £10 call it £9.99 or better still £10.01!
The next Smith you get charge them £10.02, this way you'll always know who's paid.  ;)

I considered that myself but felt that having to do such a thing to work around Santander's gross incompetence wasn't really on.

As more than one person has already mentioned, the customers don't always use a reference or it even fails to show up.

i can see a trend to go back to the good old fashion door knock in the eve or leave it under the matt method
when chq 's go

i just work on SAE with invoice number's - works well , if you could get them to stick a new invoice number in every time , would make my life easy . the small amount i have that pay bacs , i look at the statement and think - who the f--k's this , but then again im with Santander

My slip says:

Please use surname, housename/no. and road, in that order as far as space allows as your ref. details.
It's a game of three halves!
