Using hozelock has been fine for me so far, but the one thing I haven't come across is an adapter that lets me fit female ends onto my hose. I also have a 6mm id hose with the same trouble.
With 8mm I can just get enough purchase to hold the thing on, and then I bind it all up with tape. The 6mm is just too small to get over, even after heating it.

Do you have any links or pics that I can take a look at.
