What's a good wage?
« on: October 23, 2010, 01:57:45 pm »
I don't mean for cleaning windows but in all areas? I've been going through my figures and can't guage how well I'm doing without knowing what a reasonable wage is these days.

Years ago I could earn 40k (with stacks of overtime) in the print trade. That trade has become pretty much extinct around my area and I believe the basic wage is probably about 23k in that line of work for treble shifts and Saturdays when required (no overtime payment as such).

So what do you reckon?

I used to earn nearly 40k in my last job in construction. I now probably earn 15k!! I would be happy earning anything over 20k a year, I think 26k a year is a good wage. Anything over is a really good wage

I think it depends what your happy to take home, your business could do 50 k but with huge overheads you only take home say 18k

I will be happy taking home 40-50k a year, not easy though , especially not alone

A good wage is when you earn more than your wife can spend,... in my case I reckon it's just short of impossible.  ::) ::)

A good wage is paying all your bills, putting food on the table and the odd Foreign holiday. Dave the money we earned in printing was unsustainable, print not just in your neck of the woods but nation wide is finished. My brother in law has just got his 90 day notice from polestar, he is on £40.000 as a no1, that is a very good wage. But when you consider Days Nights and weekends for that he has no life , He now whant to start his own cleaning Business with his redundancy. Whats a good wage like i said paying your way and treating your Family to a holiday every now and then.

From the Office of National Statistics:

For the tax year ending 5 April 2009 the median gross annual earnings for full-time employees were
£25,800, an increase of 2.6 per cent compared with £25,200 in 2008. The median gross annual
earnings for men were £28,300 (median:half of people were below that figure, half above).

The bit I hate is:

"The median gross weekly pay of full-time employees in the public sector was £539 in 2009, up 3.1
per cent from £523 in 2008. For the private sector the comparable figure was £465, up 1.0 per cent
from £460 in 2008.  "

All that and an index-linked pension paid for out of my taxes...

I also heard the other week that a £41K household income puts you in the top 10% of British households.

Why do you hate that? Everyone is entitled to earn a decent wedge. Even if it is someone else.

Thats interesting, cheers  ;)

Mine is similar to yours but you have to remember, its not just about salary but quality of life. I earn alot less than when I was an emplyee but my lifestyle is so much better now. Less hours a day and more days off per year and more time with my family. I am so much happier now and people often comment on my permanent smile. I certainly didn't have that when I was working a stressful job as a quality systems auditor!

If you speak to a civil servant they will ALWAYS tell you that the reason they have an index-linked pension is that they get paid less than private sector workers.  They have pretty much total job security (apart from occasional purges like the one currently happening a full two years after the private sector pulled in its belt).  Both my wife and I have worked in the public sector for short periods and we both left because they do so little work that we were bored senseless.  (and everyone I know who moved into the public sector says much the same thing). So, work less, get paid more and get a pension that's gold-plated.  I really don't like paying for that.

Just checked the ONS site and it's £45K to be in the top 10%.  I must have remembered the number incorrectly.

it all depends on your bills, etc

mine are currently 2000 a month minimum then plus business overheads, tax, and spending/holiday money and savings its a alot to earn,.

fastforward ten years or so when my living costs go down i could probably have a good life turning over 500 a week but for now, it what it is, also im sole bread winner as i have a 2 year old so mrs is at home, when shes back at work i wont need as much

so i think its more a case of what do you need + what you want on top than how much is a good wage, as if i was a single person at home a low wage would be fine, but if you are a young family then 45k could easily be swallowed up
