Still the silly prices exist.
« on: October 04, 2010, 08:55:17 pm »
I am still finding window cleaners charging £3 & £4 for semis,

£2 for fronts only, !

I spoke to a w/c not long ago, and he told me,  he has not put his  prices  up for a decade!,

and was considering raising them by 0.20p ....

So why do they do it ?, how do they earn a living?

some of these guys have been cleaning donkeys years , so are well experienced

Are you one of them guys?

 ;)

Yes i have read it Danny, good thread.

This is one of the reasons maybe when we quote a tenner , some snap your hands off , and others look at you in disgust, and tells you her neighbours pay 3 or 4 pound

(funny how she dont use him though  ;) )

but with these price fluctuations , the customer will always shop around for the cheapest, until she realises who is the best !

Mind you ,i have watched one or two of these guys, .... blade down the glass and go,

nothing else.

Perhaps because they have been cleaning donkies years they have a very low, If any mortgage at all, So they may earn less that some on here but can still have a very good standard of living?

I think a lot of the older guys who have been w/c for years did it because "they "weren't qualified" for anything else. Also a lot stay out from under the wife's feet or to top up their pension.

Round our way a Polish chap (came over in the war and stayed) window-cleaned until he was 83 in about 2006 and sadly fell off his ladder doing a shop window and died a few weeks later. He charged a pittance and frankly during the last ten years at least did a "crap job" and was kept on out of pity )and pittance) I think.

He used to go round in an 1984 Astra Estate and his wife would sit in the car with him. I don't think he had kids or owned his house (he lived near me where some of the houses are council and some are private) but he reportedly left £300,000 when he died.

He lost his family when Germany invaded Poland during the war, served in the Polish divisions of the British Army and he spent nothing and worked all his life - sad in many ways but each to his own.
It's a game of three halves!

The funniest thing is when people ask for a quote and its more than they expected, they always say . . . . .
the last cleaner only charged 50p !!!

And you inevitably reply . . . . . . " well where is he ?,  they do not seem to understand that you get what you pay for  8)

I've only been cleaning since Oct 2006 but have yet to raise any of my prices...I suppose I am scared to really.

Cheers
Dave.

we have a price review every 2 years and nearly every domestic house goes up by £2 - which is then fixed for the next 2 years. works well and i dont get any problems - simple good communication is key to evcerything with the customers...

our commercials go up £5 - £15 every 2 years, again never any probs ....

its gutting to drop your prices when some git undercuts you, but i would rather keep the customer than giving them away to them. but my attention to detail inevitably suffers!  ;)

A bloke asked me the other day how much to clean his 3 bedroom semi, " £10" i replied
"phew thats rather more than i was expecting  so i really can't afford that price" he said,
"No problem mate i can't afford to do it for anything less!!" and then i just carried on working

If a custy drops me for a cheaper guy, I thank them for their custom, tell them I am sorry to lose them, smile and move on. Good custys will never drop you for another windy on price if they are truly happy with you. And you will always find that you will pick up new, better priced work to replace those you lose.  :)
