Quoted in the Cambridge university pit club in June,had the call to book the job today,it`s nylon carpet,quite a lot of it,when i spoke to the man who manages it today he said their interior designer had pointed out that it`s an American wilton,not heard of this before.
Said i will come out again and have another look at it,and make sure it`s well grippered down,may be one that i walk away from though,any tips ? May well be worth my while hiring a low speed buffer and buying some pads,although it was only a £300 job,which i didn`t think i had got due to it being 3 months since i quoted on it.

Ive heard of this, if you look at the backing it won`t be woven, just cheap webbing bonded on, you should be ok to wet clean, just check the backing!!

Yes said i need to come out an re survey,need to check for seams,and how well grippered down it is,it did look well laid if i remember right,colleges have plenty of money

That was also a worry,as it`s wide in places,did look flat,it`s a very thick pile also,very dense.

Sounds like the one I cleaned, very thick, full of pile reversal!!! Cleaned stacks of it but was only described once as american wilton. Never had one ripple on me. Probably polypropylene.

Maybe do it with lm system mate to be sure and see how it looks after..

Never heard of an 'American Wilton' - and don't believe such a thing exists.   But I do regularly deal with interior designers - and they don't half talk a load of twaddle at times.

Granted, they may well come up with interesting design features at times - but more often than not, they have no idea about the structure of the products they 'select'

It does exist,  it refers to the pattern/design and will probably be 80/20 .

You mention the carpet is quite thick, so it is probably a contract Wilton, do the usual tests and clean as you would for the given circumstances.

American wiltons have been around for years, clean as per usual for nylon. They are well known for their pile shading / reversal.

Went and had another look today,they had a large ish piece that the person who cleaned it last using h,w,e had shrunk !!!

It was def Olefin,and  was told it was extremely expensive ,did tests,looked at the backing etc,but for the sake of what i was going to charge i passed on it,told them i would rather you think i was a see you next Tuesday,then think i was an idiot for shrinking it,happened to see a Safe clean van on my way,so stopped and got his business card,then passed it to the bloke.

Just a thought....I thought I was told that public buildings shouldn't have 'plastic' carpets due to the fumes given off when they burn...or did I imagine it?

Definately wrong the majority of carpet in public buildings is synthetic,

Must have been the backing,i was told it was extremely expensive carpet,god knows what the last people did to shrink it though,it was very well held down,i know i could prob have done it ,got good results,and not shrunk it,but i don`t have treatment risk,so i decided it would be best to walk after i weighed up the pro`s and cons.
I quoted on this in June,so had already decided i wasn`t going to get it come Aug,so it`s no great loss.
Just happened to see a s,c van on the way,stopped and asked for a card,better to give the bloke i quoted for something..
What is wrong with s,clean  ?
