Depends on the wattage, think of them like light bulbs, look for the titanium ones approx 200w they are metal clad unlike the glass ones. Are you thinking mains powered for your IBC/Tank ?

I used two 400 watt aquarium heaters last year in a 400 litre tank and you get a nice luke warm water in the morning

Most aquarium heaters are thermostatically controlled to approx 32.5 degrees, the titanium ones without a termo will keep going until the water boils.

I thought about those but dismissed them as they only heat the water in the tank. I believe a much better option are small oiled filled radiators set on low. They heat everything including hoses, reels, pumps, di vessels, brushes and of course water tank's. Condensation can be a problem so cover any electrical contacts with a polly bag or whatever and all is well in the morning. Of course, if the air temperature is below -3 or 4 when you start to work, then you are wasting your time as the water will freeze on the glass almost as soon as it hits, regardless of how warm it is when it leaves the tank.

if you leave all the outlets on the tank open , will it not also warm the water right up to the end of the reel too?

and it should be just warm enough to work on freezing glass too ,maybe???

I never said it worked ronnie as by the time I got round to trying it the worst was over, but I will try this year and see if it works on the really cold mornings,

I did and I wouldnt go back and re-do either.

I bought a big heater, not your run of the mill aquarium ones. I wanted hot water not lukewarm. But it was so much hassle poncing about.

 After the first week the heater developed a fault and the electric kept tripping in the house so I returned it and was able to get a refund, which was all rather convenient by that stage especially as the thing had cost £150.
ou try a heater.
I now have an L5, so much more convenient. For lots of reasons that you dont think about until you actually use a heater.

I got two 500w heaters off ebay last year (£14 each inc postage from hong kong), thermostatically controlled & adjustable from 16deg up to about 40 degrees. I set them to 16degrees and dropped one in my static tank & one in the van tank,.. none of my gear froze and the TDS was unaffected. I had them on a timer to come on about 4pm (it takes a while for a small heater to warm a big tank) and go off at 8am. I didn't notice a huge difference in my electricity bill,.. maybe €20 or so, but its a small price to pay to protect your gear & keep you working.
