Swivels again
« on: September 08, 2010, 06:34:32 pm »
Well, it's nearly four years now since I've been banging on about getting a proper purpose made swivel that lasts and is built from quality materials.

............................................................................ and so far diddly squat!
Why?

Because you haven't converted a Stanley paint pad handle.

:) if you can show me how to do it Dai, I'll try one. It needs to fit a Gardiners pole and a Superlight brush.

I've tried too Dave, I think it may be down to the fact that you can DIY one for £3! Like you, I'd happily pay good money for the right product.

There's also a gap in the market for a superior goosneck assembly which would be both adjustable in angle & length!

I've ordered ten spare ones but two weeks have passed and no sign of anything yet. It's an industry crying out for a good swivel, more important in my opinion than a water saving device.

Start with one of these. they swivel the wrong way so you have turn the handle 90 degrees
1] Remove the pad, you won't need that

2] On the underside of the handle  there is a small phillips self tapping screw,
Undo it and you can remove the handle .

3] when you take the handle off you will see two small plastic bits on the end, snip these off, you will also notice that two of the sides are slightly flattened, take a rough file or surform and make two flats on the rounded edges so that you now have 4 flattened edges.
When you have done this the handle will locate in the 90 degree position, and can be fitted.
4] You now have a hole where the phillips screw was, but you have to drill a small hole through this one so that your self tapper can get a new start.
You pad plate is now swiveling the way you want it to, just cut this plate to fit your brush, The superlite is perfect because you only have to take the piece off that the pole screws into,
you then fasten the new plate and swivel with 2 self tappers.
I drill the holes for these at an angle, so that the screw don't go right through the brush stock and scratch the glass.
You can also use a brush like the Bentley, but if you do you will have to cut off the bit that the pole screws into, leaving the top flat.

And then it will look like this. These are really durable, they also lock if you don't want the brush to swivel, I never lock mine but it's up to you.
The instruction may sound complicated, but really it's only a 5 min job.

You can see where the self tapper is on the yellow bit.
And you can see the 2 prongs that you snip off in the second photo.

I've got most of that Dai, except the bit where it fits the normal thread on the Gardiners pole?

What i mean is - how do you fit the yellow/grey handle to the threaded pole?

Guess what? I binned one of those last week  ::)

The Superlite thread just screws into the cone handle of the swivel, as does any standard broom pole.
I use it with a Superlite, but most of the time with a Harris, this has the Cleantech aluminium adapter on the end.

So the thread of the pole just tightens itself into the handle? Brilliant Dai!
Would you mind emailing those instructions to me so I can keep them please?

I have gave up using them, they just do not last, I used to think i could not manage without them but there is only a handful of jobs that i miss it on i.e awkward angles over conny roofs. If a more quality product came out at £10 even £20 a pop, maybe more, I would buy it straight away

I have only broken one of those Stanley ones in 4 years of use, and that was due to my pole blowing over fully extended, and the swivel falling onto a wall.
