Got a job booked in for next week where one of the bedrooms has a very nasty makeup stain its dark brown possibly blusher on a cream wool berber carpet :

When i went to price it up i took my spotting kit to see if i could get any transfer with Prochem Solvall and solvex which i have used to good affect on previous stains like this but i had no transfer whatsoever.

What should i try when i do the job next week.

I cleaned an off white bed carpet yesterday, 80/20 twist tufted, spots of black make-up on a couple of areas, I cleaned the carpet first which saw some improvement with the make-up removal, then used white spirit to get the make up completely off (easily came out), then cleaned that area again.

I have some white spirit in the van which i use to good affect sometimes, i was just surprised that i had no transfer at all with the prochem products which are designed for this type of stain.

That's why I gave up on expensive solvents from these companies. The only thing about using white spirits is obviously the smell left behind (even after a thorough clean again) that's why I use a good dose of Craftex Cherry Twist deodoriser to mask the smell

Going to do this job in the morning it must be a really tough stain to deal with as the only suggestion is white spirit, it looks like a make up stain possibly foundation will try blasting it out with a high psi if solvents dont work, on google it also suggested something with an oxy solution so may try that if all else fails.

James i tried and failed on a dark brown stain on wool was told on the phone its makeup used solvents
cleaned the rest of the carpets in the house husband went to work wife turns round and said to me its fake tan : But he dont like me using it.

Mixed some amonia with hydrogen peroxide hairdryer back of the hand feeling for the heat fadded it but didnt get it all out.

to be honest this topic got by me,

you've really already answered your own question within the question. you got no transfer with solvents this tells me it could be a water based stain I would just flush it out with your extractor.


but i've got to ask, doesn't your spotting kit contain a neutral detergent spotter?

I have a chemspec (redbox) spotting kit which I've never used but I remember it had a full range of small spotter bottles with every thing from acid-alkaline, reducers-oxidisers wet & dry solvents.

if i had seen it my first test would be M/S then a dry/volatile solvent

I was always told to try solvents first before a water based removal attemt, i was on the survey for the whole house and thought i woud try a solvent to see if i could get some transfer, then i would have an idea when i came to do the job.
The customer was adamant that it was blusher/make up and i have removed this type of stain with solvex before so was surprised when i had no success this time.
Like you have said it could just flush out i have the solutions microsplitter and will give that a try, just did not consider trying on a make up stain, until now.

Will let you know how it goes, and yes Mike i do have a suitable water based stain remover but had customer with me at the time did not want to go through everything in my kit at the time.

Did the job this morning the only thing that worked was citrus gel and that got most of it out but still left a stain, customer was delighted but would have like to get it all out
