« on: August 20, 2010, 08:40:50 pm »
Hi all,

I want to go canvassing tomorrow but have not got the first clue in what to say when they open the door.

If some of you experienced guys can give me some advice it would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards

hi there I just picked up a window cleaning job in the area and wondered if you were interested in a quote for your windows.

stand well back look smart but casual and smile well unless your teeth are like mine. It helps to practice before you go with family or a mirror

Hi all,

I want to go canvassing tomorrow but have not got the first clue in what to say when they open the door.

Don't apologise for bothering them, just go straight in...hi we do a local window cleaning round in the area, do you need a window cleaner. You'll get three possible answers...
1) No.
2) yes.
3) Maybe, how much do you charge?

;DAsk open questions, starting with what, when, where, how. How often do you have your windows cleaned? When did you last have a window cleaner in the area? How do you clean your windows? This way you don't get a yes or no answer and you will get talking to people.  I'm no expert in canvassing but I have vast customer service experience and it works.

yes but everyone hates a salesmen at their door and that tactic might get good results but it will lead to one off and one or two cleans before the novelty of having clean windows wears off, what we want as window cleaners is customers that want their windows cleaned and not sold a service they do not want, as it saves dumping them later.  Its a bit like leaflets if they phone you then they need you and have not been pushed into it

"I was passing and noticed the windows in your hovel were absolutely minging. As it happens I'm a window cleaner (thrust card into his/her hand). As and when you want them cleaned feel free to give me a call."

Then walk away muttering (so they can hear) " What disgusting pigs...how can they live like that."

"Hello i'm EXPANDING my window cleaning service in this area, and I wondered if you needed a window cleaner?"
If no hand them a business card or leaflet and ask them to give your number to people they know in the area who require your services.
If yes, always ask that you can walk around the whole property so that you can give them an accurate quote.
Check the property out and then ask them "How often do you require you windows to be cleaned,4,6 or 8 weekly?"
When they tell you the duration they require, you give them the price.
When they accept, arrange a day to clean or clean them on the day if possible.
Don't over complicate it with long speeches and the like theres no need.
Keep it basic and natural conversation will flow.

Yeah I see what you are saying Stu Mac know. You don't have to be that pushy salesman though. You are just  asking open honest questions to establish if they have or need a wc. It was a suggestion to offer something different to the comments that have been postoed and an effective method that works in other areas not just sales.

I ask " Hi, sorry to disturb you, do you have a window cleaner at the moment "  I have a small diary/notebook in my hand so I can take details properly.

I also like the " I'm expanding in the area...... "

You do get the odd one that says " errr....  "  they're usually the ones that need a cleaner but you can tell a bit hesitant at admitting it in case you give them a lengthy sales pitch or push them into something.   As soon as I see/hear an " err..... "  I'll ask them if they'd like to know how much a regular clean would cost, no obligation.   Once you've walked round and priced up they usually go for it.

I love the buzz of getting new customers when you finally get a needy area after all the other no's you can get in the wrong area.  Of the few businesses I've had it always amazes me how easy it is to just go out and canvass for window cleaning (after you've got past the fear at the start).
