anyone else ever had a knee op ?
« on: August 18, 2010, 09:37:48 am »
I have an arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) booked in for next tuesday, having had a ligament reconstruction 10 years ago I now suffer with the occasional pain and stability issues. I'll be out the same day but just wondering if any of you on here have had similar ?
The appointment was a short notice cancellation and although I have tried to bring work forward and clear next week to have time off I'm worried now I may be off longer  :-\  I'm wfp and no ladders but a mate of mine had both knees done at the same time (he's a gardener) and was off for 6 weeks or so, I know mine wont be as bad as its just the one knee but if you've been through it too how soon were you able to return to work ?

I've not had knee surgery as such, but did smash my knee cap to pieces a few years ago. 8 weeks in plaster and 3 months of intense physio. My knee has never been the same since. I suffer problems especially in the colder months.

Good luck with your recovery.

my mums had both her knees renewed and as long as you do the therapy afterwards ,no problem whatsoever
having said that, a few months ago i got chatting to a gent up a ladder painting his house and he too had both his knees replaced. but one of them didnt "bed-in " properly and he had to be strapped down onto a bed while a machine worked his leg up n down non stop for 48 hours .  His surgeon told him that many folk hurry in wanting a new knee ,but he recommends a new knee ONLY  when its sheer agony

As an ex-ladder jockey, both my knees are shot.

Booked in for surgery but not for another couple of months yet.

Good luck, and let me know how you get on.

yep thats the one gr, did mine on my mtn bike, been ok for 8 yrs or so but this last winter it gave me a lot of grief, not just the cold but the damp weather too. was in two minds as to wether to go ahead with the op but am fortunate enough to have the same surgeon who fixed it originally and he thinks its worthwhile, guess its better to get it looked at now before the winter. A quick google of acl arthroscopies has kinda put my mind at rest, most people returning to work within a week / desk jobs a few days, atleast I'm rarely up a ladder these days  :D
thanks

It's quite a simple Op' - I was walking in a day. They used to call it keyhole surgery. Don't sweat it - it's not that painful. You'll be feeling ready to go back to work in about 3 days, just take it easy.
I had the other one fully opened up - not nice & took a while to recover.

I had the same thing abot 6 years ago, I was wfp then and on the tools every day so was very worried, although not as worrried as I would have been back in the dark, old fashioned, black and white days of ladders.  ;D

I took the doc's advice and did everything he said and I was back at work fairly soon after, steady at first but very quickly back up to speed.
It was about 2 years to full recovery for me. by that I mean it took that long to not even notice it, for a long time it was noticeble weaker than the other knee but never to the extend of being a problem.

if you follow the dcoctors advice I am sure all will go well.

Good Luck.
