Winsol Crystal Clear 550, quite a lot better then MDR.
« on: August 13, 2010, 05:54:07 pm »
Had my first chance to use the winsol solution today, even though the warnings on the bottle did make me feel a bit uneasy! Goggles this, gloves that, splash in eyes or hands you're dead (sort of)

Anyway, used it on a terribly bad window (sprinkler), and even though I just used a unger microfibre sleeve it shifted beautifully! Good stuff this is. Apparently you shouldn't ever use it on coated glass etc, but I'm quite pleased with it. Also it stays clear, so unlike MDR, you can actually see what needs more scrubbing.

Don't you have to use wire wool to shift the mineral deposits?

How long did it take you? I do have a number of customers that have mineral runs down their downstairs windows, and they have asked about the possibilty of removing it.

Like I mentioned in the original post, I only used a microfibre sleeve, which did the trick. :)

Just received my bottle of winsol. Tim, what method did you use to actually clean the stuff off the glass. I would imagine with wfp. If so should I use old brushes on it.

Cheers

I understand that he applied it with an applicator sleeve but if the chemical has all sorts of warnings over the bottle then I don't want to risk coming into direct contact with it.

I will apply it at arms length on an extendable pole and applicator sleeve but just wondered how he got the windows clean afterwards. I don't fancy doing them trad for risk of chemical burns to skin etc but if using a wfp do you use an old brush or does it not have any adverse affect on the bristles

chris. its top stuff. i faffed about with mdr and others that people recommended on here. but winsol is the kiddie. i used a little pot and paint brush to apply it. use it sparingly and it will do the trick. you could just use a cloth to

I've got a bottle in the van - shocking stuff. I've wrecked two windows with it (old glass) and have found it renders the glass hydrophobic which means any glass I've wiped with it water beads like mad showing all the wipe marks. I doubt i'll ever use it again. Prefer Viakal these days.

It's very dangerous stuff. It's basically hydrofluoric acid. If it gets on your skin and you don't immediately rinse it off if can seep into your bones and start destroying minerals in your body. In extreme cases it can lead to heart failure.
In addition CC550 can cause a problem called Tin Etch Haze. All house glass is manufactured by flowing out of the oven suspended on a layer of molten tin. For the life of the glass one side will have a minute  amount of tin embedded in it. When hydrofluoric acid (CC550) hits the tin side it dissolves some of the tin and causes a haze on the surface.

Just washed it off with wfp, just the normal brush.

To mr. mistersqueegee and Dave Willis, if you read the links I've provided, it's not for all glass (stage 2 corrosion etc). Glass in reasonable condition, not much of a problem there.

That was the problem i had with the old single pane glass. I treated a sash window with four panes of splattered glass. Two went milky and were instantly wrecked - probably the tin side. The other two panes were fine. Modern double glazed units I've used it on show all the wipe marks when rinsed and then look dreadful hence why I doubt I'll use it anymore.

Hmm, strange. I will keep an eye out for this. Thanks.

Can winsol be used on old leaded windows or will it wreck the lead, maybe even peel it from the window?

Well, just used winsol on my living room window. We had some staining on it due to me taking 3 months to remove the spray on Christmas snow from last year. It's come up fairly well but I have to say I was expecting better results.

Do you guys leave it on to soak for a while because I just scrubbed and rinsed almost immediately after applying with an old paintbrush.

There are still some stubborn stains down the edges of the pane but it's got rid of the main bulk of the staining
