Hi i have an Altec proffessional plus portable machine.Half way through a job today when there was a bang and the pump stopped working and a slight burning smell. The light for the pump switch is still working but nothing is happening.I opened it up and the live wire from the pump is slightley black where it connects at a plastic connector.I have a bad feeling it's the pump(it's only a few weeks old
) please don't tell me you think it's the pump, any ideas.I,m going to have to change my name to mark d`alcorn,i'm having that much bad luck latley.

Have you checked all fuses?. There is a fuse or two to be found if you unscrew the front instrument panel, or maybe behind the switch panel, cannot remember which now, sometimes they can blow.

The pro plus has fuses in the control panel. A flat blade screwdriver will undo them. If the wire is black it sounds like you had a short that then blew the fuse. I assume the vacs etc are working fine? Check the earth on the pump and the live where it's attached to the wiring loom. Mine were in a three way connector block, check there is not a direct short there.

I changed the fuses on the front panel.I will unscrew the instrusment panel to see if there are any more.Would there be a bang though if it was a fuse? All the switch lights are working, the vacs and heater are working but there is no noise from the pump or pressure. My machine has a three way connector block aswell and that is where the live wire looks slightly burned.

check the connector block, it could short if it's damaged, could of been done during fitting.

You dont always need to change the whole pump when its knackered, just change the end bell ,its a lot cheaper
