Righty we have had 2 new roof`s put on our house,vaulted ceiling,and some loft space which i boarded out,i opened up an old fireplace,and will be buying a multifuel stove ,the carpet is thick with all sorts of muck,will it damage my machine if i try and clean the carpet under the mess ??

Perhaps I'm missing the point here but if you were intending to keep the carpet (1) why didn't you take it up before releasing the hand granades or (2) put a thick protective membrane over the carpet.
Prevention is better than cure and all that.

I did,but the ceiling was dropped down on it ,i then used it to cover some of our possessions,builders didn`t bother using anything !1

Mate because i said i would chip in and help the builders too my landlord,think they took the pee,I re wired all the lighting,swapped switches,removed junction boxes,knocked out the fire place,insulated and boarded out the loft,removed all the old ceiling,just been out and put the tarp over the roof,as it`s just been rendered,they left it all uncovered,got my work cut out !!

The ceiling used to be level with the top of the door,and the kitchen units,was constantly ducking,to avoid the strip light  !!
All the space above it was just dead,and un used

now now colin thought a triple vac was    and i quote " truckmount performance "

in all fairness colin a tm would be more suitable because of the amount of plaster board etc would be a right pain cleaning your waste tank plus i would think with any amount of pre vacing bts of plaster board would not do your motors much good

Correct me if I am wrong but you said you boarded out and insulated the loft.

Evidently you arent supposed to do that, when we had ours done I was goin to do that but the man said leave the insulation as it is, it has to be left 'loose' to let it work. He said he has helluva job telling people not to board their lofts on top of the insulation. It may be different if you use the slab type insulation.

I may have misread your post so you may have done it to the roof therefore I am sorry.

The builders were fine with it Murky,need the extra space above insulation,there was nothing there before ,so anything will help keep the heat in

Regarding loft insulation and boarding.....I used to install loft insulation. When loft insulation has been installed it takes a few weeks for the insulation to settle.  If you do intend to board over the top of the insulation then i recommend that you do this in one of two ways.

1,  Only install 100mm of loft insulation, this will once settled come upto the top of the loft joists. This will give you the effectivness of the 100mm of insulation installed.

2,  Higher your joists from 100mm to 250mm. This will need to be done by a expert.

The recommended depth of loft insulation is now at 250mm. You will be wasting money if you have 250mm installed and then board straight over the top of it. For loft insulation to work you need to let it be puffed up without crushing it.
When you builders install the insulation make sure that they do it correctly.  100mm should be laid between the joists the 150mm needs to be laid across the joists. This in turn ensures less gaps in the insulation for warm air to pass though.  Also make sure that there is a gap at the end of the end of the insulation where it meets the eaves to allow for ventillation. Loft insulation should never be pushed toightly into the eaves.

As for your comment of The builders wer fine with it......nothing there before so anything will help keep heat in.  This is not strictly true, Builders will do what they THINK is fine.....and if you flatten the insulation then you take away its effectivness.

Sorry i got carried away and forgot to mention about the carpets.....

Yes your porty will cope fine with cleaning them however, you must ensure that you pre-vac the hell out of the carpet.  Just keep on doing the pre vac and make sure that you vac N,S,E,W. Dust from any kind of building work is usually very fine so pre vac is really the way to go on this. Also use a carpet rake to help loosen the dust.

Getting the worst of it up with the Henrey,then i will go over it with the Tennant,i am still in the process of knocking the plaster off the fireplace,undecided if i am going to lime wash it or leave the bricks exposed,they are quite soft from not being allowed to breath,covered up with modern plaster instead of lime plaster,i will be using all the correct materials,especially lime,the years of bodging here is unbelievable.I pulled out about 10kg of plaster in a big lump,that had been used to fill a gap,put a new beam and door frame in,think i was upsetting the builders,as my work looked better than theirs,they had no safety equip,didn`t even wear masks,they were laughing at me for my face mask,hard hat and gloves er look at him,noone has ever died breathing lime in,yeah but the 400 years of god knows what,i blocked up the filters in my pro mask several times !!





The builders said they found a huge wasps nest,that went from top too bottom,and encompassed an entire oak beam,and they destroyed it completely,there were loads of other wasps nests too,prob what we could hear scratching above our heads in the bedroom....Minging
