Couple of questions that i am hoping you guys could give me advice on as i am looking at employing someone legally.

1. How do you go about paying them, do you give an hourly rate, commission only or basic plus commission. I may be wrong but i think it is ok to pay commision only as long as there is potential to earn national minimum wage. I know if i was looking for a job i would want hourly paid but from owning the business i know that is not ideal as a lot of days of work are lost in winter, where no money is comning in.

2. If the person you have employed is to work at other end of town, how do you deal with the issue of travel. The options i was thinking were

Buying another van for him to use, but the running of a van is not exactly cheap.

Drop him and equipment of in the morning then pick him up at night.

Ensure that you only employ someone who has own vehicle. If you do this do you pay them something for using their vehicle if yes how much do you reckon is a reasonable price.

put then on a 16 hour contract, with a hourly rate, that way they can get a full week but if there is no work then u only pay for 16 hours work,   what i would do is for first 16 hours at 6 and then any thing after that 7,  this way if u get rained off after 3 hours they have only earnt 3 hours pay, but it is up to them to get more than 16 hours a week done to earn more,  if you know what i mean   ie   crap weather and they do 8 1 every day that is 25 hours a week,  16 at 6 and 9 at 7

i worked it out the other day that for me to employ someone on a other van to make 600 a week turn over as a van,  each house world cost me 3.20 to do, inc wages, fuel, meterials etc

I pay basic hourly rate plus bonus based on performance. If there is no work then I don't pay them.

I pay from 8.30am. If they aint here by then home with no pay.
