Definately get a 2.5" hard drive they are usb powered so you can just connect up and use it, bit more expensive but so easy to plug in and use
If you get the 3.5" hard drive you will need to plug it into the mains too

Dave, didn't you move on from George and use the other one?

I was thinking about it, had enough of George at one time.

I have got a genuine copy of windowcleanerpro which i won in a raffle, never got around to using it yet.

The switch over seems to daunting to even thinkl about.

In additon Dave, if you don't do so already, consider remote backup to the web.  It's not much good if both drives are in the same room and are subjected to magnetic field or fire.

Anti static clips nullify the requirement for an anti-surge device.

If it's just to backup your George data I would recommend a USB Pen Drive with a weekly backup to a blank CD/DVD. Remember it's important to keep a backup away from the premises you normally create your data. i.e. family or friends. Just in case, God forbid, the worst happens.

I’ve been evaluation George and it’s a solid database that is desperate for a few modifications to make it a little more marketing friendly and the facility to sort on a few extra data fields would be useful. I did find a bug in the software a couple of days ago and emailed Paul who modified the software and updated the upgrade download yesterday. I’ve written to him since to ask if he’s interested in a few suggestions I have but he’s not replied as yet. In its current form we will not be registering our copy of George.

Regards,

Dunk

Hi Paul, my usual back ups consist of email and drop box and transfering files between 2 pc's

I have now got the  external hard drive £40 from comet.

Is it best to use the windows utility and let it back itself up evrey week ?

i have never done wholesale back up before, i usually do it in dribs and drabs.

Dunk

I once lost a pen stick with all my work on it, God only knows what happened to it, as for George, I think I have found at least half a dozen bugs a year since I started using it a few years back.

www.dropbox.com for backing up George. Its sooooo simple, easy to recover, totally safe, and accessible from anywhere.
8gb per account
I use it for all my biz files, i can even acces them on my Blackberry. I was with the accountant last week and needed some information and was able to get at it there and then.

For you dave and all the data and letters qoutes you have on going and on file.

I would use an Iomega external drive, it comes with automatic backup software, first you
can backup the whole pc, then set it that every time you cange a file or add a new letter it
will back up automatic, with out you doing anything.

I use one and for your bussines would be great.

If hackers can break into the Pentagon computer system then I don't think a free "Dropbox" will be much trouble if anyone tried.
No way would I have all my details and my customers details stored online :o

I have my external hard drive connected to my network with a cheap USB server device I got off ebay,.. its slow this way transferring files over the wireless, but it means my backup is at the far end of the house from my laptop,.. in the event of a fire there's a better chance that at least one copy would survive.

As for online backups,.. not a bad idea, but I have lost data previously when my online service provider messed up their system & replaced my files with a 3 week old backup.
