Gardiners Microbore.....need to stop pin hole leaks
« on: May 27, 2010, 05:46:01 pm »
Having returned 2 hoses to Cleaning spot due to them bulging and being faulty, I ordered from Gardiners, and the hose is fine, no bubbling or inner/outer layer coming apart.............but I had a tiny pinhole in about 3 metres of the end of the hose which began to leak in the van. This was ok, I cut it off, put everything back together as it wasn't a major issue. Now I have another one about 8-9 metres into the hose. It looks like the outer (yellow) casing has a tiny imperfection from manufacture and you can see the white inner layer. Its tiny, but is causing another leak and water in the van. I don't really want to cut another 8-9 metres off the hose. So is there any way this tiny leak can be repaired in any way??

Thanks for any input

Fieldsy.

you can buy hose repair tape, will work short term, the leak is normally caused by rose bush thorns or going round walls ect that are sharpe, if this hose was new and had holes in it, I would have sent it back as faulty.

have you been using it ?

Been using it for about 3 weeks, but noticed the small imperfection when I was checking the other leak, but at that point it wasn't leaking, so I left it. Now it seems to have weakened and is now leaking from that point.  I don't seem to have much luck with hoses. :(

hi m8
you don't have much luck with hoses , you can buy hose menders (6mm -6mm )barb, to repair leak , i would repair it , then wind out full length of hose and turn it round , then the repair will be at beginning of hose and will be left on reel.

Self amalgamating  tape will repair your hoses, I keep a roll in the van for this reason.

For the inner hose to go as well it sounds unusual.  If your having problems with lots of hoses from different suppliers then I would look at your set up.  If you have a flow controller then is it possible that the pressure is turned up too high, so the pump isn't cutting off soon enough and the hose is building up more pressure than it can handle.  I have Gardiners microbore and the outer hose has been stripped off in some places where it has been abused but it still doesn't leak as the inner hose is in tact.

Hi Simon,

Well the flow rate on the varistream is 2 and the cut off setting is E. When it was on C (default), the pump would just keep cutting out ??

Thanks to all the other input, a few ideas to throw around there.

Appreciated.

They buy it from the same place! In fact you've bought the same hose with a different fault each time.

I grew up over there, I live in the great Basildonia now.

Hi Fieldsy

If the pump is turning off at just the right point a second or 2 after the hose is closed then the pressure won't be too high.  I have the old varistream 2 non digital model and have found that the pressure changes as the battery runs down, the lower the battery gets the longer the pump will run after the hose is closed.  I think I will change to a different controller eventually.  Gardiners do advertise that their microbore is manufactured exclusively for them, maybe you have just been unlucky.

Simon.
