Apologies for the rather delayed reply to everyone asking about our induction programme (mentioned in the topic "how much do i pay my staff?). Hope this is of some use:
I always cover health and safety as the primary topic, and this is geared towards the type of work the employee will be doing - domestic, office, building site etc.
All employees are given a detailled list of exactly how we like our cleaning to be done. I just find that this eliminates any confusion ie do we tidy up, do we do washing up etc? Employees are also given a job sheet specific to each customer, which details their quirks and exact requirements.
In the first week the new employee is shadowed by a senior staff member or more established cleaner. At the end of the week i meet with the new employee to discuss any worries etc In the second week they work alone and again we meet to discuss any further problems. In some cases we also use "practice houses" ... these are the homes of friends, relatives etc where we send new cleaners when we want to check the standard of their work without letting them know that we are checking up on them. This isn't done to try to catch them out, but more to establish potential training needs without undermining the hard work they put in.
I have found that one of the most important things is to prepare a new employee, detailling exactly where they are going and what they will be doing. It might mean extra paperwork and personal time initially, but it is beneficial in the long run.
If anyone can let me know of things that they do that i haven't included i'd appreciate it. I hope that my list is of some help. If you would like copies of any of my induction paperwork, please send me an email.
Michelle
