Get a black or coloured tank to avoid potential build-up of algae through penetration of sunlight.

IMO don't go smaller than a 500 litre tank, you may generally use less, but always better to have too much than not enough.

DIY is a good option if you have some practical nouse, just do your research thoroughly.
