Alliance & Leicester Commercial Account is FREE (that popular four letter word!) for a limited period (think it is 12 or 18 months) after that pay in £1k per month to avoid charges!

Pay in at any Post Office.

Simple & easy.  :)

Not sure about the £1k min pay in = Free bit.

I do my banking with a small branch of the Halifax; they're so good even Ian_Giles has opened an account with them.

You don't need a paying in book; you just hand them a wadge of cheques and your card, and I sometimes apologise if it's a lot of cheques; but I try to bank at least once-a-week.

I pay my cheques into my own personal account, no problems, and the girls are lovely too.  I always get them a box of chocolates each Christmas.

I've been doing this for nearly seven years now; no charges.

Same as Tosh. Been paying cheques into an account in my name for more years than I care to remember, I get BACS payments also.   Not paid a penny in charges.

Yip exactly, why oh why would anybody with a turnover of less than 65000 a year want a business account. I just asked my bank for another account to put money in and have never been charged a penny in the last 2 years of banking cheques. Thats what you call unlimited free banking.

ive been using my personal account for years, but decided to seperate accounts, which works alot better now, just pay myself a wage and all expenses come out of buisness account.

i went with lloyds cause thats who i bank with and i get 12 months free. not really sure how much it will be after that, but intend to get most of the custies onto direct bank transfer

I have always used a private account. Even when I invoice large and small companies I always say at the bottom of the invoice to make it payable to "...." i.e me. I have never come across a problem yet and some of them do bacs which again go direct to my private account.

new to window cleaning, just started to collect by cheque, does anybody know how many cheques you are allowed to cash before your bank starts to charge, and would they change your bank account to a business account?? cheers in advance

If you join the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) for £100 a year, you get free business banking whilew you are a member, free insurance against the accounting costs if you are investigated by the IR (this alone is worth the £100 a year), and free legal advice about any matter.  There are other things thrown in too but can't remember it all.
Another alternative is to start a business banking account with Abbey.  100 cheques a month and about £3,000 cash a month before charging.  Must do all transactions via cashpoint though so no coins.  Electronic transfers are free so if you get a number of your custies doing BACS transfers, it will reduce the number of cheques.  I've used it for a number of years and never exceeded 100 yet.  Occasionally I've held off making cheque deposits for a couple of days to stay within the boundaries.

If thgere was a regular surplus over the 100, I would put a few larger ones into my Abbey personal account (so hopefully it wouldn't be flagged) and do an electronic transfer to my business account once they had cleared.
