Pig of a Day
« on: June 19, 2008, 07:39:38 pm »
I had another guttering Job to do today, so I sent Michelle off to do a few houses while I got on with the guttering, Set myself up and began the clean on the front of the property, all went well apart from one little black spot I couldn't shift, I used plenty of ecover and the high pressure jet, I ended up taking the brush to it and still it wouldnt budge, I ended up thinking that it could be the rubber seal that had squeezed out of the joint and thought I can't shift it,  I'm going to have to leave it I thought.

I took the before and after clean on the front, and still wasn't happy with this black mark, I ended up sticking the camera up there to see if I could see what the problem was, I was gob-smacked after spending so much time trying to clean it, I found out it was a small hole in the guttering, I felt a right plonker.

When the custy came out to have a look, I said did you realise you had a hole in your guttering?? 'O' Yes she said the rain pours out of there, Grrrrr!
Have a look at the Joint and see if you can see the little black spot? this is the hole, that I spent so long trying to clean.

Took all my gear around the back of the house and re-set up, I cleaned the internal sections with no problems, changed the bits on the lance for the external clean, and applied all the ecover with the low pressure Jet and then changed it over to the high pressure to begin the clean,

what happened then was the high pressure hose blew and it shot right up my shorts Whooo!
Now I'm knackered without the lance in action, so I had to clean it all with the brush and the only way I could rinse it, was to turn the pressure washer on and clean on low pressure, now that was hard work, I don't Think cleaning with a brush any where near a good a finish as the lance and pressure washer.

First 2 pictures are of the lower front section.

This was the back section, I'm afraid the light wasn't to good when I took the after shot, But all in all it  ended up being a reasonable Job at the back, but it would have been better done with the lance.

Nice job you done there jeff.

Is it an extendible lance you are using and you said you apply ecover with the low pressure lance.

How do you squirt the top with the low pressure lance.

If i put my pressure washer on low pressure to suck up some detergent i know i can't reach the top from the ground.

I have to put my extendible on for that and then that does not suck up detergent

Hi Paul
If you look for a topic Jeff1 that Ian put up tonight, he asked the same questions, the link for the lance  is also on that topic.
I also put some pictures up of all the bits used.

Cant seem to find the topic.

Any chance you remember the topic title or can you add a link to it?

Just to let any one know who is thinking of buying the lance, when you buy it, you also have to buy the bits I listed, but you also do not get the hose that attaches from the pressure washer to the lance, you do get the hose that runs up through the lance and that comes already fitted.

I had a pig of a day on a gutter/soffit clean too ...

Started at 7.30 and at 8.30 two sections of my carbon fibre modular (aka fishing pole) stuck together.

Fortunately I knew a mate would be passing half an hour later so I phoned and asked him to stop and help me untwist the sections.

There's me, him, his mate (them in smart trousers, shirt and ties, all on the side of the main A4 Portway trying to untwist it. Him one end, me the other and his mate in the middle. We just managed it without cracking it - phew!

The carbon fibre modular is wonderfully light but if I jam it up against the inside of guttering and bargeboard it sometimes sticks!
It's a game of three halves!

Top man! thanks.

Jeff, any chance of doing a 'youtube' to show it in action?
The little video camera I borrowed from Shell is a complete waste of time, its one of those with 2 pencil batteries in, so as soon as you switch it on the batteries die on it.
I have put a couple of pictures on my web-site under the guttering section, there not close ups but in future, I'll get someone to get some close ups of the pole in action.

If you can imagine the results you get when you pressure wash your patio, then the same results can be achieved when you do guttering with the lance.

The first few goes you have with it, its hard work, but the more you use it the more accustomed to it you become, you will then fly through guttering Jobs and leave a job to be proud of.

If I can help anyone in the future with advice your more than welcome to email me  privately.
Good luck Guy's

And i bet you never swore once  ;D ;D

Good point you mention about the pole sticking.
The lance has the twist lock joints, you can see them on the link I posted, Now these Joints are evil for sticking and locking, so anyone with a loose grip may get into problems, I over come this problem by undoing all the joints one ata time and covering the threads with a coating of grease, ever since I did this I have had no problems.

Grease it as soon you buy one, saves you looking a plonker on your first Job.
