Canvassing laws.
« on: September 06, 2007, 09:14:37 pm »
Starting up, but need to drum up as much business as possible, fast.

I hear talks of canvassing and leafleting laws on here?

I'm in the west mids, can anyone point me to a bit of info so i can see if anything applies to my area?

Thanks

A lot of area Trading Standards Officers and local police are trying to establish no canvas zones.

They pretend this is the law, but as far as I know they are bluffing.  If anyone has ever been prosecuted or can show me a court or newspaper report of such a prosecution I would be interested.

Our county Council operates a Fair Trader scheme  one if the conditions of a listing is No Canvas.

If you canvas on Telephone numbers should be checked against Telephone Preference Scheme, fine £5000 . I have never read of a prosecution but this law is on the statute books.

No Leafleting not happened yet talk of an EU directive Environment Officer at local authorities want it as they see it contributing to waste and their objective is to cut down on the waste mountain.  However you may find Zones have been created see above.

As a local Councillor  I think they are wrong on this one as small business must have ways of telling the public they exist and display Newspaper Ads are beyond the reach of most start ups.

Handing out Leaflets in streets . A lot of local authorities have issued a no leafletting order in town centres car parks etc . Fixed penalty fine.  Reason costsmoney to pick up dropped  leaflets  Nigh Clubs and Pubs were chief offenders.

Some authorities will issue a permit for a fee and you have to go round and pick up dropped leaflets before you go home.

I always visit the local police station before I go out to inform them that I shall be out knocking doors and what streets I shall be knocking, saves any hassle from old grannies ringing the ol bill on you, and I have also built quite a good relationship with quite a few of the local bobbies which can only help. ;D
