Are you backing up your data
« on: September 24, 2004, 11:35:37 am »
Along the lines of the phone scam mentioned on another post, (sorry no pun intended ::))

I hope all you guys who have your business details, customer data base etc are backing up your data on a regular basis (every 1-3 days at least) and I don't mean just to disk.

When your computer goes down or is attacked by a virus the disruption it causes is only matched by the money it costs you to rectify or in my case replace the system. This happened to me a couple of years ago and it was a hard lesson learned. As a result I lost all my files and had to start inputting all the info from my paper files on the new system all over again :o

The cost of data retrieval from specialist companies is horrendous (£1000's of pounds) worth it to major companies but not viable in my case.

I now have anti-virus and firewall installed on my system but most importantly I also have Datasure
from BT where by all my data is backed up and sent via the internet to them for safe storage off site. This can be done daily if required.

In the event of a disaster either loss of data or hacking of your computer etc or you install a new system, you can simply click a button and get all your data sent back to you safely and put back onto your system.

Piece of mind is a wonderful thing ;) but don't, like me wait until it's too late do it now if you havn't already.

Trevor,

I have have several back-up policies over the years - and have had occasion to be glad to have a secure back-up available.

My cuatomer database is stored on two computers on a network. Whenever I make any ammendment I click on a desktop icon and the data is sycronised on two HDDs on one computer and one HDD on the other.

Daily back-ups are made to floppy disk on the three generation basis and these are stored in a different room.

Weekly back-ups are made to CDRW disks that are stored at my elder daughters' home.

Keeping your back-up on a shelf near the computer will not be of much use if you have a fire in the office, or another room if the house burns down.

This is why your remote storage solution has so much merit.

John.

Hi

These USB drives are great for backup:

The "Dididisk" ones are dirt cheap - 256Meg for £25 and they come with a USB extension lead.

XP recognises them without any drivers - just plug them in you have an instant removable drive. Great for people who don't have a floppy disk drive.

Hi

An easy way to keep an online backup is to open a free eMail account (like Yahoo) and eMail your backup to yourself regularly - just leave it in your inbox.

Users of our software (George) can eMail their data to us for safekeeping.
